It's a wonderful treat to have my dear friend J.D. Brown here today. I've asked her many interesting questions about her new urban fantasy release, Dark Heirloom. The book takes a fascinating twist on vampires. She gave great answers, so please join me in welcoming her.
Your heroine, Ema Marx, has no idea how she became a vampire.
At the orders of his father, Jalmari, a vampire clan leader, brings Ema to
their castle in Finland. The vampires there expect her to have answers. What do
they expect her to know? What questions do they have that she might be able to
answer?
They expect Ema to
know how she became a vampire. Since Ema was human all her life, the only way
she could become a vampire is if she was bitten, but biting a human is against
the law, especially when that human happens to be of Romani decent. Jalmari
demands to know who’s responsible so they can be arrested, but Ema has no idea
because she actually wasn’t bitten by anyone.
Why does
Jalmari’s father want Ema in their castle?
He wants to keep an
eye on her. He suspects he know exactly who and what Ema really is. And that’s
all I’ll say about that. J
According to Jalmari, Ema’s presence in the castle seems to
trigger a series of events as if she is a catalyst. How is his leadership suddenly
threatened?
There was a
two-thousand year old premonition concerning Ema. Because of Jalmari’s current
circumstances with his father, if the premonition comes true it will mean
certain death for both of them. Jalmari also believes that even if he somehow
doesn’t die from this, he’s sure to be caught for the secret he’s been hiding
and will be stripped of his title by the Council. He feels he’s caught in a
situation where he can’t win no matter what.
That explains why Jalmari seeks to kill Ema. How does the
knowledge that she can also be the clan’s only savior aid her? Who comes to her
defense? How is the clan in danger?
Jalmari’s father is a
threat to the clan but no one knows it yet. Jalmari’s younger brother, Jesu,
has been charged with the duty of protecting Ema and keeping her alive until
the premonition comes to fruition. The only problem is Jesu falls hard for Ema
and this causes him to not always make the best choices. He’s also torn between
her and his brother.
Interesting twists in the plot! This is labeled urban
fantasy. What urban setting is used? Does the action travel back and forth
between that urban locale and northern Finland?
The majority of the
story takes place in modern-day northern Finland. There are a couple scenes
that take place in Helsinki (Finland’s capitol). Book 2 gets more urban as Ema
and Jesu travel to Berlin, Germany.
Can we expect a sequel or more following Dark Heirloom?
If so, will the books be sequential?
Yes, this will be a series. I’m
actually almost done writing the sequel, Dark Liaison. I do recommend
that the books be read in order. There are a lot of details about the vampire
world, their laws and history, that all come into play.
Thank you so much for having me, Marsha. I always adore your
blog and am honored to be a part of it. J
Title:
Dark Heirloom
Author:
J.D. Brown
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Book Blurb:
“You’re a vampire” is
so not what Ema Marx wants to hear when she wakes from a two-day coma in a
cryptic yet exquisite castle in northern Finland. Unfortunately, it explains a
lot. Like why she’s able to see in the dark and walk through solid
objects. What she doesn’t understand is why the other vampires expect her to
have all the answers. It’s their fault she turned into one of them…right?
Jalmari’s hatred for his old-man intensifies when he’s ordered to bring that troublesome girl to their
castle. He has a clan to run; there’s no time for babysitting newborn vampires no matter how they were
converted to their culture. But when a two-thousand-year-old premonition
threatens to take the crown and his life, Jalmari sees no other choice than to
take out the catalyst, Ema Marx. Fortunately for Ema, she could also be the
clan’s only savior.
The race to figure out her vampiric origins is on. And
maybe she’ll get the hang of the blood-drinking gig along the
way…

Marsha, thanks so much for having me and I hope you and you're family are having a lovely Easter.
I'll be spending time with my family today but I'll make sure to sneak away and check in here for any comments or questions from the readers. Can I offer you a deviled egg? Their my favorite. :)
Readers, don't be shy. I'm happy to meet you and answer questions.
Thanks, JD. It is a lovely day here in Tampa. And I'd love a deviled egg. Yum!
Your book sounds totally awesome, Jennifer :) This was a great interview. I wish you all the success in the world! I know how hard you've worked for this.
Awww, Kurt, thanks so much! :)
Wishing you success with yours too!
I'll have a deviled egg, JD. :) I wanted to comment really quick before my family got here. Have to support my favorite Urban Fantasy author!
Question--I know how bad Jalmari's and Jesu's father is. How in the world does Jesu plan to protect Ema. What powers do they have that they could use against him? Do they all have the same powers?
Okay...so it was a few questions. ;)
Charlene
Hi Charlene,
Excellent questions. My vampires have supernatural abilities. Jesu specifically has the ability to manipulate the four natural elements (earth, air, water, and fire). Other vampires have different powers that they inherit from their sire. Ema has quite a few powers herself.
Jesu's father is much stronger then they are though because he's a first generation vampyre. You'll see what that means exactly when you read the book. *wink* I can't say how they will beat him because I don't want to ruin the story for anyone but I will leave with this nugget to think about: Jesu's command is only to keep Ema alive...how he goes about achieving that goal is open to interpretation. Because he's also in love with her, his emotions tend to make things a little more complicated. :)
Nice interview. Northern Finland sounds like quite a setting!
Thank you, Jenny Milchman. It's certainly a different setting. I enjoyed writing about Finland. It's a very beautiful country.
