"Why I write fantasy...to paint with words" ~guest post by Robin Lythgoe

Today, I'm especially pleased to welcome Robin Lythgoe as my guest on her Magic Appreciation Tour showcasing her new release, As the Crow Flies. She's sharing what inspired her to write fantasy. Be sure to check out her new fantasy release and her great contest at the bottom of this post.

Thanks so much, Marsha, for having me on your blog to talk about AS THE CROW FLIES. The entire process of writing—and producing!—a novel has been such an incredible experience from the first kernel of an idea, to holding the print version in my hands, to working with all the wonderful authors, bloggers and teachers I’ve met on this journey.

One of the questions I often get is “What made you choose to write fantasy?” Saying “Because I like it” seems a little too easy, a little too glib. When I was growing up my family read a lot—all of us—so I was introduced to a wide variety of genres. Books like The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, The Chronicles of Narnia, and the ubiquitous Lord of the Rings were staples when I was young. My mom introduced me to the historical novels Mary Stewart and Nora Lofts, the mysteries of Phyllis Whitney, Anne McCaffrey’s Pern, and Edgar Rice Burrough’s Tarzan and John Carter of Mars. My oldest sister actually read The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings out loud to me and my little sister; she also gave me the wonderfully romantic and fantastic book Scarlet Sails as well as Howard Pyle’s Merry Adventures of Robin Hood. Another sister acquainted me with an eclectic assortment of things to read in the form of a huge stack of boxes my mom conveniently stored for her—right outside my bedroom door. Through my brother I met Louis L’Amour’s Sacketts and the Chantrys and a host of thrilling adventure/spy books. My father sometimes read westerns, but more often I remember him reading non-fiction, which I’m afraid I didn’t gravitate to until I was much older (and which has subsequently crept into my storytelling). My aunt gifted me with The Chronicles of Narnia and The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-ExupĂ©ry. What a wonderfully rich tapestry they all wove for me!

Today I will happily read almost any fiction, but as I started reaping the library stacks on my own, it was to fantasy I was most drawn. Oh, the magic! Not just the spells and talismans and wizards and elves, which I adore, but the intricate worlds, the strange creatures, the very construction of those amazing foreign settings! The attraction is, in part, pure escapism. How exhilarating to jump into a setting that doesn’t really exist! To shake off the dullness of our ordinary lives! And that’s where the next quality comes into play: imagination. There are (or were!) rarely pictures to illustrate those strange races, beasts, and plants, so the seeds of description sprouted in my mind and my imagination filled in the blanks. I long admired the creative minds that fashioned those fantastic lands. How utterly amazing that people could imagine—and write—orcs, Borrowers, Lilliputians, the dragon Faranth, the Companions, Willow (who sometimes had to be a tree), ents, world gates, the Whomping Willow, snake vine…

Hand in hand with the imaginative settings go the tales of lives lifted from the mundane to the extraordinary. Where would FitzChivalry be without the Wit and the Skill? What purpose might Ben have found if he hadn’t gone to Landover? What would have happened to Simon without Binabik and Jiriki? All of those exciting, imaginary details play major parts in stories of challenge and change, of love, of heroism. They add a facet not found in the world in which we live. “What if” becomes real to us for the duration of the book—and beyond. Isn’t that amazing? Embracing the impossible and activating our imaginations stimulates us, as a people, to create new things. Not just fiction, but in the things we invent and the solutions we devise. It allows us see more, reach for more.

So, why do I choose to write fantasy? For the creativity, the artistry, the challenge, the more… I can’t paint, but I can write, and in writing, I can paint with words. It’s magic.

BOOK BLURB:

“One more job” means that Crow, a notorious thief, can retire with Tarsha, the woman of his dreams, but “one more job” may just mean his life.

When Crow sets out to steal that last brilliant treasure and seek a life of ease and pleasure with the jewel of his heart, he seriously underestimates his mark, the Baron Duzayan. For a thief, getting caught is never a good thing. Getting caught by a wizard is even worse. Under threat of death by poison, Crow is coerced into stealing an improbable, mythical prize. To satisfy the wizard's greed and save the life of his lady love, he must join forces with Tanris, the one man Crow has spent his entire career avoiding.

But what's a man to do when stealing that fabled prize could level an empire and seal his fate?

From a dungeon black as night, to the top of a mountain peak shrouded in legend, a man’s got to do what he must. Unless, of course, he can think of a better plan…

RAFFLECOPTER GIVEAWAY:

Praise From Reviews:

I was pleased to discover an interesting story line and an engaging and complex protagonist whose voice and personality evolve throughout the novel. — V. Burnett

From the moment I opened this book to when I closed it I was caught up in the adventures of a charming, sarcastic, and clever thief who stole a very large chunk of time from me, but it was well worth the theft. A delightful time was spent in another world filled with adventure, mystery (I love mystery!), wizards, and magic... — M.C.

I loved it from start to finish and it leaves you wanting more. Robin is amazing at describing the picture so it is real in your head. Crow, the main character, was a lovable thief with a wonderful sense of humor. — Marla Oveson

I love a good cloak and purse-cutting dagger, and Crow delivers. He's armed with a silver tongue, sleeping dust, feet that'd make a cat feel ungainly, a razor mind, and a diploma for best-in-class at the school of fine thieving and infiltration (awarded by me). I've read about approximately a billion thieves and even played the vintage first-person-looter games Thief, but Crow still impressed me as a sterling example of skulduggery. — A. E.

Getting Deep: How To Write What You Know ~ guest post by paranormal fantasy author Sally Dubats

Today, I'm especially pleased to feature a guest post by paranormal fantasy author Sally Dubats. She's talking about where inspiration to write her fantasy stories comes from--real life. Be sure to check out information about her lastest release,Winter Shock.

Getting Deep: How To Write What You Know
By Sally Dubats

I have always loved stories in every form: books, movies, theatre, MTV. I have expressed myself creatively in many ways, not only as a writer, but as a dancer and artist, and I also come from an acting and directing background. I cherish this background because it has been invaluable to all my forms of creativity, and maybe most so to my writing. How does acting relate to Fantasy writing? Writers are told over and over again the mantra, “Write what you know!” How do you do that when you’re writing Fantasy?! Teachings borrowed from traditional acting practices show us how to do just that! These traditional teachings give us not only a new world to explore and write about -- they give us the universe.

Many actors use the Stanislavsky Method of acting. This method requires that you recall something emotional from your life and use those same emotions for your characters during a performance. Actors are naked and vulnerable because of this raw emotion, at least the great actors are! We pull from our pain, sorrows, laughter, and every bit of juice from our life and put it out on the stage for the world to see. Who can forget the gut-wrenching scene from “Avatar” when Neytiri screams to the heavens because of the senseless and brutal death of her father? My guess is that the actress, Zoe Saldana, couldn’t pull from her life as a Princess on a planet at war who lost her influential Chieftain father, but she did pull from some horrific experience in her own life to make us feel her pain so deeply, and she should have received an Academy Award for her performance -- especially for that raw pain to show through the animation! It was amazing.

Writers can do the very same thing. Take experiences from your own lives, and put them into your fantasy. I’ve found it incredibly effective in my own writing. I use the Stanislavsky Method in my writing to recreate an emotion, just as I did when I was acting, and put that emotion into words. I bring it up, and then narrate it onto the page. I did this with the “make up kiss” passage in “Winter Shock.”

The kiss became everything, our entire journey. It was a kiss of desperation, of hope, of longing, and of love. The kiss was the whisper of all our lies, regrets, and apologies. It was a kiss of acceptance of whatever the future held. We were together. It was the kiss of lovers going through Hades to Tartarus together, and promising to come out the other side. Together.

The circumstances of the kiss I recalled were very different, as in, I wasn’t questing for the survival of the planet on a frozen mountain at the time of my kiss, but my own experience allowed me to write Cassie and Trenton’s kiss, and the kiss I wrote about was definitely theirs, not mine! In other words, I was writing for and about Cassie and Trenton, but those feelings came from a very real place inside of me. Zoe Saldana was in full character, but her tears came from a real place inside of her. Let your writing comes from a place deep within you.

This works for action too! My readers ask how I wrote about the very physical, raw nature of the frozen world of “Winter Shock.” Hey, I grew up in Michigan! We went sledding, dug tunnels in snow drifts for forts, made ice forts out of blocks of frozen snow, and one time I was stuck in snow up to my eyes as a kid, and had to wriggle my way out. That helped when I wrote the avalanche passage. I’ve also snow-shoed in altitude in Colorado, hiked to 13,000 ft summits (in the summer - still lament that I never made it to a 14,000 peak!), and have done plenty of camping. The rest was a lot of research and interviews with experts. As fantasy writers, we can pull from more ordinary events in our life, especially the intense feelings and memories that go along with them, to create the drama and action in our stories.

So the next time you’re writing, write from LIFE! Feel it, go deep, give the gift of your experience to your fantasy characters, and in turn to your readers. Put it on the page.

Good luck!

Book Excerpt

I opened my eyes, but I couldn’t move any other part of my body. It was dark. My obnoxious red hair fell across my face. My head and shoulders slumped forward, but I had no strength to sit or move my hair out of the way. I could look with my eyes, but even that was an effort.
Paralyzed?
My eyes wildly took inventory: a seatbelt across my chest, a steady hum, car door to my right.
Trenton!
Trenton was next to me. We were in a car. Driving.
I couldn’t move or speak.
‘Think, Cassie!’ But there was absolutely nothing I could do. Fear surrounded my heart like a dark tomb. I tried to calm my thoughts, to breathe, to meditate, but nothing had ever prepared me for anything remotely like this.
We were careening down a highway in the black night, chaotic white snow hitting the windshield in the darkness.
I remembered. Trenton had drugged and kidnapped me.
I was powerless.
I tried to put the pieces together, but nothing made sense. Trenton had changed in the space of a few days. One minute, he was the tender, considerate, kind Trenton I knew, and the next he was an intolerable monster. I was mentally beating myself up. I should have known something was wrong. Holly warned me. I didn’t listen. And now I was paying for it.
Was Trenton going to kill me? A wave of fear ripped through my heart.
I had to get control of my mind; it was my only weapon. I didn’t know where we were going, but it couldn’t be good. My thoughts battled to make sense of what was happening. I closed my eyes. The last terrifying days might give me insight to the biggest question racing through my mind: Why?
It started with a vision. The vision of a girl.

Crazy Weather, True Love and the Natural Balance of All Things ~guest post by fantasy author Vanna Smythe

Today, I'm pleased to have Vanna Smythe share an interesting post with my readers as well as some information about her latest releases in The Veil Series.

Weather has been odd these past few years. You will likely agree with that, whichever part of the world you call home.

Such odd, uncharacteristic, ominous weather is precisely the sort of thing Joinings, as described in my debut fantasy novel Protector (Anniversary of the Veil, Book 1), can prevent. In the world I created in Protector, the energy released as two who love each other truly come together, can be used for many ends. The two that make such a pair are called a Beacon and an Answer, and it is the Catalyst who releases their energy, then guides it towards the wrong that needs to be righted.

However, such an arrangement is not natural.  The energy of true love is being used and abused, made to flow at the bidding of people.

The main question raised in Protector is whether true love is stronger than any of the rules imposed, stronger than over 1000 years of tradition.

Yet at the heart of the story are the characters. They are the ones who must deal with these issues and whose decisions will ultimately lead to the final answer.

There is Protector Kiyarran, or Kae, whose whole world unravels in the first few days after his biggest dream comes true.  He becomes a Protector of the Realm, an elite soldier, only to find out that the secrets they kept from him are enough to make the world an entirely different place. To top it all off, out of nowhere, he now feels strong love for Princess Issiyanna.

Issiyanna, or Issa, is to wed a man she does not love.  There is another whom she dreams of most every night and he is the one she loves beyond all.  That is because she is a Beacon, and people have been sent to collect her.

Will natural love blossom, or will the world continue as it has for the past 1000 years? Will true love still be used as only a tool, a means to an end?

Well, I’m not going to tell you that right now.  Those answers will come in the upcoming, Book 2 of the Anniversary of the Veil series, called Decision Maker, which will be available soon!

Meet the King and Queen of Denial from Tournament of Chance ~ guest post & giveaway by S.G. Rogers

Meet the King and Queen of Denial from Tournament of Chance

Thanks, Marsha, for allowing me to talk about TOURNAMENT OF CHANCE on your blog!

Have you ever been in denial? I know I have.  In fact, I’ve practiced denial so frequently I’ve become quite good at it.   Whenever I read novels where the characters are in denial about their feelings, I sometimes wish I could reach inside the book and give the characters a good shake! Of course, I will confess those sorts of characters are the most fun to write.  In TOURNAMENT OF CHANCE, the main character is seemingly the Queen of Denial.

Heather has nothing but antipathy toward royalty after the king of Destiny mistreats her.
So when she agrees to help a trio of royal Ormarian wizards overthrow the king, she has no plans to fall for one of them. From the moment she meets handsome Dane Ormvalder, Heather denies her attraction to him. In the beginning, his arrogant demeanor and caustic attitude make that easy.  When Dane’s true good nature begins to surface, however, Heather finds it increasingly difficult to feign indifference to the best looking man she’s ever met…

Excerpt:

Dane conjured a sword and armor for Joe and the two of them practiced swordplay above deck when the sun shone. Joe was well trained, but he lacked discipline and focus. Heather was impressed with Dane’s ability as an instructor. She also noted how quick Dane was to give Joe the encouragement and praise he sorely needed.

“Not too bad that time, Jovander. I thought you had me once or twice.”

“I learned from the head of the king’s guards,” Joe boasted.

“I was the head of the king’s guards,” Dane replied, winking at Heather. “Let’s work on that disarming move. You’ve almost got it down.”

The third morning dawned wonderfully clear and bright. Heather soaked in the sunshine while enjoying Joe and Dane’s latest match. She was glad for a ready excuse to gaze at Dane, admiring not only his quick reflexes and finesse, but also his athletic frame and handsome face. When she’d first met him, she thought his looks were arresting—despite his disdainful and arrogant attitude. Now, she acknowledged privately he was the most handsome man she’d ever seen. After he caught her staring a few times, however, she tried to be more discreet. She had no wish to give Dane the false impression she was besotted with him. One can admire a thing of beauty, such as a stallion or a dragon, without desiring to possess it, she told herself firmly.

Okay, Heather’s obviously in denial.  But if you want some REAL denial, you should hear what’s going through Dane’s mind.  Heheheheh.

~ S.G. Rogers

In Tournament of Chance, a hunter’s daughter becomes the spark that ignites a revolution—in time.

When a beautiful commoner enters the Tournament of Chance archery competition, her thwarted victory sparks a revolution in the oppressive kingdom of Destiny. Although Heather never believed the legends about the restoration of Ormaria, after three shape-shifting Ormarian wizards awaken from a long magical slumber, she joins their perilous quest to regain the throne. Heather battles vicious predators and angry trolls to free the wizards’ magic, but at a horrendous cost. She is unexpectedly torn from the arms of the man she loves and hurled back in time to fulfill a prophecy not yet written. The ensuing maelstrom tests Heather’s survival skills, wits, and endurance. Will she become an unwritten footnote in history, or can she trust the magic to lead her back to her one true love?

Uncovering the magic behind your book ~ Guest post by fantasy author Asher Tensei

Today, I'm pleased to have fantasy author Asher Tensei     guest posting about a very interesting topic--the process of discovering the magic behind your book. Please be sure to check out the information on his new release, Mana.

Despite what anyone says, being published is a giant accomplishment. There’s nothing like that feeling you get when you know that people are going to read your book simply because it’s available. To me, it feels like Christmas. I even still get the tingles when someone says my book’s name or refers to something I wrote. It really is amazing.

Speaking of amazing feelings, does anyone know what magic feels like? I’m sure some of you do, but for those who aren’t quite sure; magic is that shiver of excitement that can’t quite be explained, the nights of no sleep because an idea won’t go away, and just the motivation to push forward no matter what! Now that we know magic exists, let’s talk about how you get this wondering feeling to work for your book :D

Sure, it’s true that every single thing was once a thought. My book was a thought, your book was a thought, hell, and even Twilight was a thought. Think of thoughts like plants. Would you water a seed just once and expect it to grow tall?
Probably not.

Tend to your thought and grow it. Don’t just write something because it sounds hot. If you don’t feel your book, then more than likely your book is not feeling you either. Words are magic on paper and we’ve all heard this more than once. Anyone can write, but not everyone can weave gold with their words, this takes time.  It takes a special push to get a thought into a book, so no matter how you wrote it, you wrote it and you should be proud of it!

Let me tell you…I still have the very first copy I wrote of Mana and boy was that rough work. After I looked at all the editing I had to do with it, I was discouraged, but I really wanted the book to be great at the same time. Well, long story short, here I am two years later actually publishing it! Even though it was rough, I stuck by it unconditionally. And really…

That’s the magic.

Just keep telling yourself to never give up and every dream is reachable.

Author Bio
Although Asher Tensei is relatively young, he has already traveled the world as he has been a military brat since the age of four. He has always wanted to share his creative writing, and it was in Germany that he realized people also really enjoyed reading his stories. Mana was composed shortly after and it instantly got the support of a small but enthused local readership. Few could believe that Asher had written a full length novel during his fifteen minute breaks while working at Burger King. He is very passionate about the fantasy genre and graciously gives thanks to the one series that made him realize that writing high concept YA fantasy was something he wanted to do--The Twilight Saga. He maintains, and frequently updates, his site http://ashertensei.com/.

Book Excerpts
“Damn…people in this town are crazy,” he said to himself. “2012 doesn’t seem like the year…” He dusted himself off and glided to his stop to make up for lost time. He was relieved that a few students congregated there. It calmed him from the encounter a little.
“Hey, Eurich!” A soft declaration came from the small crowd of students. A girl with light mahogany hair pushed her way through the minute gathering. She skipped through the crowd with her hazel eyes fixated on him.
“Patricia!” Eurich shouted excitedly. He ran over to her and picked her up, twirling her in a hug.
“No touching…don’t think you wanna do that,” she allowed.
“Why not?” He set her down and took a step back.
“I’m sick,” she frowned, then covered her nose. “You think I would be wearing this to school?”
“I can’t tell,” Eurich reassured. “But now that you mention it, those shorts are a little too short for dress code.”
“My mom thinks it’s bad, I have to go home…and I really don’t know how long I’ll be out.”
“Why’d you come here then?”
“Cuz,” she blushed. “Maybe I wanted to see you.”
“You coulda texted me,” he laughed.
“Well, you couldatold me you had a phone,” she chuckled sparingly. “I would hug you, but…ya know.”
He smiled. “You know I don’t get sick that often. But I hope you get better soon! Need me to walk you home?”
“Nope, I’m good. Just wanted to catch you before you left…”
