Romantic Friday Writers__United in Death

Romantic Friday Writers is a blog fest every Friday. Many thanks to L'Aussie and Francine Howarth for creating this fun event, showcasing the work of many fine writers. Click on the icon at the end of my post to check out others participating today or join the blog fest. A winner is awarded the recognition of being this week's featured author.

Today's challenge is to show 'Voices' in 400 words or less. Being a fantasy writer, I have a lot of strange voices in my writing, so I had many selections to choose among. My favorite is from a WIP entitled Illusions of Intimacy. It's a time travel fantasy romance, one of my favorites, but waiting its turn for time to be finished.

Immediately after making love, the heroine, Ula, witnesses her lover's death. Voices in her mind plague her with the decision to run and save her present mortal life without him, or to allow the wolves to kill her so she may reincarnate and possibly find him sooner in the next life.

While still united, lost in our love, the window glass shattered. Shards flew as missiles, slashing our exposed skin. Myriad pieces clinked across the stone floor.
The wolf from last night, along with two other grays, emerged from behind the curtain of broken glass.
“Sandulf!” I screamed.
With no time to get to his feet, or transform into a wolf, the three overpowered my lover. His eyes filled with terror. “Ula, run! Keep the pearl. It will help protect you.”
How could I leave him after a century apart? Lost in confusion, I remained motionless.
The leader tore at his side.
He screamed in pain, turned his head to me, and growled, “Go! They sense our union, strengthening our spirit bond and power. I'll find you.”
As I turned, the three closed in and gashed his skin with their canines. His blood spattered the rug where we just loved. His screeches shivered my spine while I sped out the room, along the hall, and down the spiral staircase. I only paused at the heavy main doors, my eyes scanning the foyer, wishing for some clothing. A cloak on a nearby rack served my purpose. I flung it over my shoulders and ran into the sunlight.
I ran with all my strength through the woods surrounding the estate and into the neighboring fields.
Their howls pursued.
I reached a dirt lane and continued with aching legs.
Yet the howling drew closer.
My legs burned.
The wolves outmatched my endurance.
I willed my legs to keep running, while my mind separated from the numbness in my limbs. My thoughts slipped into reverie. Why am I running? Why am I leaving my lover? I still hear his screams in my mind. Why not die his death, be united in death? Feel what he feels? Our souls will live another life. Our white wolf spirits will sooner find each other. A real life, rather than stolen fragments. Our bliss. Stop now…and share his life, his agony.

Visiting exotic Persia with my work in progress, Illusions of Intimacy

My work in progress, Illusions of Intimacy, is a time travel erotic fantasy involving eight exotic settings. This is a true delight for me because I love creating magical worlds.

The hero and heroine are lovers joined by a bond of their souls. When the pair come together, their combined magic is so intense it commands notice from all, both good and evil. Dark powers seek to possess their unique bond and cast the couple asunder through tragic injury or death. Break their love and the magic is for the taking. Yet, their souls hold fast across many reincarnations into new mortal bodies. Foiling the forces of darkness, so they may remain beside each other, becomes their quest.

In my writing progress, their present generation lives in ancient Arabia, traditionally called Persia. The inherent mystery of the sea of sand provides the perfect backdrop for entrance of the first villain.

As I create an atmosphere I enjoy researching culture – architecture, clothing, art, folklore, music, dance. I take those components and flavor a unique fantasy setting.

I’d like to share some entertaining finds I made while conducting that research. Here are two videos of Arabian music, both enticing and alluring as they illustrate romanticism of that culture. The first is entitled Arabian Waltz, by The Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma as their guest. The second, filled with lovely landscape images, is Sufi music performed by Omar Faruk Tekbilek.

Illusions of Intimacy, Chapter Six: Rebirth

From my novel, in progress . . .

Floating free. No poison pained my body. Floating alone. My arms could not hold you.

Pages you wrote to me turned before my eyes, revealing the ancient secrets. I penned my hopes and dreams into my notebook for you alone to read. If it could happen . . . to be pleasured daily by the touch of your soft skin, the smell of flowers in your hair, the light of love glowing within your eyes. I shut the journal, resolved to secure those tokens.

A light pulsated ahead, drawing me nearer. A dragonfly silhouetted. It spoke in a familiar old man's voice, “Heed my words, master. Across the sands of time, the first of three keys is held by your lady's lover.” His words trailed off, as the brilliance flared before me.

Was I not her lover? What riddle was meant? Illumination engulfed me, obliterating my reason. Only that question, repeating over and over, unanswered.
