Magical Monday: Powers of the Serpentine Emerald

I’m not big on snakes. The herpetology house at the zoo is my least favorite—too slithery. As I glanced quickly from one exhibition to another, I heard a hissssssss behind me. I looked over my shoulder at the case I’d just passed and whirled around to see this. The snake coiled, displaying this ring to full advantage under the spotlights of the cage. The giant emerald sparkled and hypnotized. In an instant, before other spectators approached, the snake remained but its gem disappeared—surely magical.

But, how? What does this emerald do for the snake? What might it do for someone else who possessed it? Please help me with your opinions.

In my opinion…the bearer of the ring gains tremendous powers—the ability to alter the minds and memories of others—at a tremendous price, living on borrowed time until one day he/she is turned into a serpent. The only way the owner can be rid of this curse is to tempt another whose greed is as great. Once the ring is stolen, the former owner is set free of the scaly prison and returns to human form. But…I’m just guessing.

What do you think? What is the magical purpose of this serpentine gem?

As usual, Marsha, you have the most intriguing passes into magic and mystery. We all just want to go there with you! Is that a Diamond Back Rattler, BTW?

Hi Heather! I'm not nearly as good at snakes as fantasy, despite the fact I have a degree in Biology. I wasn't lying that they give me the creeps.
