Top 5 Angsty Wizards ~guest post by Robyn Bachar, author of The Sephra's Tear

I'm happy to have Robyn Bachar return to share a wonderful guest post with my readers about her list of the most power-hungry wizards. Great choices! Be sure to check out her new fantasy romance release, The Sephra's Tear and also her fun contest at the bottom of this post.

Top 5 Angsty Wizards

With great power comes great responsibility. No one understands that better than a wizard. With the right spell a wizard can do great good--or great evil. I've always had an admittedly unhealthy fascination with evil wizards. As much as I love a good hero's journey, I wonder about the bad guy. Protagonists do the right thing because it's the right thing to do, so why do antagonists do the wrong thing? What drives them to the dark side?

In The Sephra's Tear, Cordelia comes from a family of dark wizards that are like an unholy union of the Malfoys and the Corleones. Until now she has never crossed the line into dark magic, but the temptation of just one spell to finance her freedom is hard to resist. Is it bad to do the wrong thing for the right reasons?

Below I’ve picked five of my favorite troubled, power-hungry wizards. Who would you add to the list?

1. Loki (Marvel Cinematic Universe)

When Tom Hiddleston’s Loki demands that the people kneel in Avengers, legions of Hiddlesfans squeal “yes” (and I’m one of them). I love watching him in the first Thor movie because there are so many close-ups of him watching something and you can almost hear the plot wheels turning in his mind. Would we be better off under Loki’s rule? Oh hell no. But it’s fun to watch him try to take over the world. ;)

2. Ursula, the Sea Witch (Disney's "The Little Mermaid")

Where Loki sees ants, Ursula sees poor, unfortunate souls. The sea is a mess, and she just needs to rule it! If nothing else, she’s definitely a creative problem solver.

3. Raistlin Majere (Dragonlance Chronicles)

Oh man, I have so much inappropriate lust for the hourglass mage. And while I know that, much like Loki, Raistlin Majere would squish me like an insignificant ant beneath his boot, it doesn’t stop my obsession.

4. Anders (Dragon Age II)

Really Dragon Age II should be called, “Damn it, Anders!” He just wants freedom for mages! Even if it means blowing up an entire chantry in the process and starting a war between mages and templars. Sigh. He does have an interesting character arc though, watching him go from kitten-loving goofball in “Awakening” to vengeance-obsessed abomination.

5. Ravenna ("Snow White and the Huntsman")

Charlize Theron is made of awesome. I would watch her do anything (and mud-spattered Chris Hemsworth too), and really, if K-Stew is the only thing standing between you and ultimate power, wouldn’t you be all about cutting her heart out too? …okay, maybe not. But I did enjoy watching this take on the Snow White story.

Just one spell will change their fates…

Cordelia is a pawn of House Dorchada—a notorious noble family comprised of thieves, assassins and dark wizards. Desperate to avoid their poisonous politics, Cordelia plotted her escape for years, but her carefully laid plans are jeopardized when her father commands her to marry an aged lord of Frostever.

With only a few short months left before her wedding, Cordelia’s salvation hinges on creating a Sephra’s Tear—a forbidden amulet that causes overwhelming lust in its victim. A black market buyer promises a life-changing amount of coin as payment for the Tear, but being caught creating it carries a death sentence.

Two wizards are needed to produce the passion to fuel the erotic spell, so Cordelia recruits the aid of peasant wizard Nathaniel Ravenwood. Nathaniel has long denied his desire for the beautiful Cordelia. As a noblewoman and a Dorchada she is as dangerous to Nathaniel as a viper, but the fortune she offers is a temptation he can't refuse.

Dealing in dark magic comes with a price, and Cordelia and Nathaniel risk losing their freedom—and their hearts. Their fates depend on the one spell that will free them, or destroy them.

 Excerpt

Nathaniel’s study was located in the lower levels of the stronghold, carved out of the stone the city was built upon, where the wizards of limited financial means lived and trained. The décor changed with each floor she descended, the layers of artistry and comfort stripped away until the walls and floor were bare gray stone. Like everything in White Harbor, the lines dividing the wealthy and the poor were clear. Cordelia enjoyed the tangible privileges of noble birth, but she knew she wouldn’t have them for much longer. She’d gladly give up silk and perfume for the freedom that wool and sweat would bring her.
When she arrived at Nathaniel’s door she paused and inhaled a deep breath. Cordelia had committed many small larcenies, and a Sephra’s Tear would be the boldest sin she had ever attempted. Cordelia’s hand trembled as she raised it, and she knocked and opened the door when she heard him bid her enter.
Seated at the aged desk dominating the room, Nathaniel glanced up from the book he had been reading. Surprise flickered across his face for a moment before he rose.
“Lady Dorchada. I won’t have your money until the first of next month.”
“Yes, I know.”
“Then to what do I owe this honor?” Though the question was phrased respectfully, his tone was suspicious. She couldn’t blame him—a Dorchada at one’s door was never a harbinger of good news.
Cordelia stepped into the tiny room and let the door shut behind her. He had a desk, a small alchemy table and a stove for heat. There was one other chair, but it was occupied by a tall stack of books. She glanced at it and gave Nathaniel a pointed look. Rounding his desk, he cleared the books away and waved his guest to take a seat.
“Thank you.” The stiff chair was uncomfortable, but Cordelia sat in it primly. “I apologize for the interruption. I will try not to keep you long. I have a new business proposition.”
“You have my attention.” Nathaniel returned to his seat and watched her with a neutral expression. She hesitated as the well-rehearsed speech vanished from her thoughts. Cordelia cleared her throat and tried to phrase her request as politely as possible.
“I need assistance with casting a somewhat difficult spell, and I hope that you may be able to aid me.”
“What sort of spell?” Nathaniel tended to be brusque, and his straightforwardness added to the anxiety tying her stomach into knots.
“One that would require discretion, should you choose to be involved.”
Nathaniel sat back and folded his hands in his lap. “All of our dealings require discretion, my lady. Thus far I’ve been impressed by your caution.”
Cordelia nodded. “Thank you. It is a Sephra’s Tear. A potent Tear.”
The wizard’s dark eyebrows rose to nearly his hairline. He raised his folded hands, covering his mouth to hide his expression. She admired his composure in response to such an unusual request—he probably didn’t often have women arriving unannounced at his door to ask that he make love to them until they both collapsed. Then again, he just might, considering how attractive he was. Nathaniel was older than Cordelia, but not by much. Unbound, his long black hair fell past his shoulders. As with most wizards Nathaniel’s hands were slender, hinting at dexterity instead of strength, and he had high, sharp cheekbones that most of the noble ladies in White Harbor would kill to be graced with. His plain, charcoal robes were well made, but were durable instead of fashionable. Cordelia found his eyes to be his most interesting feature; pale, crystalline blue, Nathaniel’s eyes were mesmerizing, though they were usually filled with suspicion when looking at her.

Magic librarians. Even vampire librarians! ~ guest post by Robyn Bachar, author of Poison in the Blood

It's great to welcome Robyn Bachar back with her new release, Poison in the Blood. This book has all sorts of paranormal creatures...even vampire librarians.

*~*~*

The supernatural world of my Bad Witch books includes a wide variety of paranormal creatures and magic users. Witches, shapeshifters, faeries, sorcerers, seers, librarians—yes, librarians. Magic librarians. Even vampire librarians.

I love libraries. As a student I worked in the main library of the University of Illinois. The stacks are massive—two buildings, ten floors, endless rows of books. I always wondered what secrets might be hidden behind the aged doors marked “Do Not Enter.” Could there be tomes of arcane magic tucked between the farm reports? Ancient spells hidden in the rare book room?

In the Bad Witch books librarians are the keepers of magician history. A librarian’s greatest wish is to join the Order of St. Jerome and become a chronicler, so that he or she can do their job for all eternity and tend a glorious, enormous library of magic. Becoming a chronicler is considered a great honor, something that a librarian works toward his entire life.

So what happens if a librarian has spent his entire life preparing to become a chronicler, and he suddenly learns that he has a soul mate? And not just any soul mate, but the beautiful, charming woman he’s been secretly pining after for years. That’s Michael Black’s dilemma in The Importance of Being Emily (included as a bonus in the print edition of Poison in the Blood—it’s two books in one!). Michael learns, much to his surprise, that his soul’s perfect match is the meddlesome seer Miss Emily Wright. Michael has sworn himself to the Order, and to have a life with Emily means turning his back on everything he’s worked for. As a seer, she can’t join the Order, and he’s faced with a tough decision: Immortality, or true love?

The Importance of Being Emily and Poison in the Blood tell Emily and Michael’s adventures in a Victorian England filled with magic and murder, and how they find their happily-ever-after despite their star-crossed state. I love writing these characters, and I hope that readers enjoy them too.

She is honey to his throat…but one sweet taste could part them forever…
Banished from home while her husband adjusts to life as an immortal, blood-drinking chronicler, Emily Black is homesick, heartsick and struggling under the constant sensory barrage of a city drenched in ancient magic. When an old friend asks for her aid in solving a string of murders, she welcomes the distraction, despite the danger.

Justine Dubois is grateful for a seer’s help, and more understanding than anyone of Emily’s plight. As a guardian, Justine commands respect; as a woman, her magic is considered inferior. Together, they are determined to prove their worth to London’s magicians, starting with solving these murders—with maybe a bit of matchmaking on the side.

Long before he met his soul mate, Michael Black made a commitment to join the Order of St. Jerome. He will live forever, forced to watch the woman he loves age and die. As Emily hunts the murderer, Michael struggles to protect her. But if he loses control of his hunger, the greatest threat to her safety could be Michael himself.

Excerpt:

Normally stepping into a garden would soothe me, but we were still within London, where there was no comfort whatsoever. I looked up at the night sky and wished I were with Michael.
“You have the soul of an artist, Miss Rose. It is a rare gift.” Mr. Paris stroked my hand, and I tugged it free of his arm. I folded both hands before me primly and smiled.
“Again, that is very kind of you.”
“I consider myself a patron of the arts.”
“So you attend gatherings such as this often?” I asked.
“Of course. I am always on the lookout for new talent.”
“I see. Did you know Mrs. Harding?” I tried to examine his aura to determine his reaction, but his magic continued to be so overwhelming that my eyes watered. Mr. Paris must be unspeakably powerful, and I found myself both worried and intrigued. Perhaps he was a sorcerer? One who specialized in darkness?
“I did. Poor girl. What a terrible thing to have happened to her and her family… Tell me, are you working on a second collection of your work?” he asked, quickly changing the subject.
“I am, though I am afraid the subject matter is quite a bit darker.”
Mr. Paris smiled a predatory grin, and my pulse leapt with a thrill of fear. “I am not afraid of the dark, Miss Rose. Are you?”
He stepped closer, but I held my ground, studying him with a curious tilt to my head. “What are you?” I asked.
He blinked, startled. “I beg your pardon?”
“What sort of magic do you practice?” I clarified.
“Oh. I am a librarian, of course,” he replied, and I laughed, unable to help myself. “What’s so funny?”
“You are most certainly not a librarian. Do people truly believe that lie?”
The smile slid from Mr. Paris’s face as his expression hardened. He stepped forward and tried to grab my arm, but Miss Dubois was suddenly between us, a shining silver blur. With a snarl he turned and ran, and the guardian chased him out of the garden and into the street.
Uncertain of what to do, I followed. I stood hesitant at the garden gate, wondering which way they went. My vision shifted, and I followed Miss Dubois’s blazing footsteps. I paused next to a blur traced over the high brick wall of another garden. It was another magical doorway, rather like the one I had discovered near Mrs. Harding’s body outside the Undiscovered Country. Foolishly I raised my hand to touch it, despite knowing full well that doing so could trigger another vision, but a hand emerged from the brick wall and grabbed my wrist.
Overwhelmed with shock, I barely managed a strangled gasp as Mr. Paris stepped through the wall and glared down at me. “Who are you?” he demanded.
“You first.” My voice trembled, and Mr. Paris grinned. He tightened his grip and snapped several small bones in my wrist, and I screamed.
“Who are you?” he repeated.
Something bubbled up within me, a bright plume of prophetic magic that became my answer. “I am your end.” That time my voice did not tremble at all, but was filled with terrible certainty. I would cause Mr. Paris’s death, and I knew it with as much confidence as I knew the sun would rise in the morning.
Something in my gaze must have worried him, because he snarled. Scowling, he grabbed my forearm with both hands and twisted. The bone snapped like dry kindling, and I screamed again. Before he could torment me further Miss Dubois arrived and bashed him with a round silver shield. Mr. Paris vanished into thin air, and the guardian stood near me. One arm bore the shield, while in her other hand she held a sword. How cunning of her. I wanted a sword as well.
“Are you all right?” she asked.
My knees wobbled and began to buckle, but then two dark blurs streaked up to us, and I was suddenly swept from my feet and cradled close in Michael’s arms.
“Darling! What happened?” he asked.
“You caught me.” I blinked—however had he moved that fast? Simon sighed and shook his head at his student, and I sensed that Michael and I were both in for a scolding.
“Of course I did. I will always catch you. Are you all right?”

Interviewing Robyn Bachar about her new paranormal romance release, Fire in the Blood

I'm pleased to be able to interview paranormal romance author Robyn Bachar about her latest release, Fire in the Blood.

Be sure to check out her book as well as her awesome giveaway at the bottom of this post.

Patience Roberts is a summoner, the last one standing between magiciankind and demons. As a summoner, is she a faerie or a wizard? How does she perform her work, banishing demons? Did she train for this position or does she possess natural talent? Does her work require a lot of magical and/or physical strength?

In the Bad Witch books, anyone who possesses magic is a magician. As a summoner Patience is a specific kind of magician, but she is also part faerie. Banishing demons takes a little ritual and a lot of chutzpah, and Patience is one of the best in the business. She’s also the only one in the business during Fire in the Blood, which keeps her extra busy. Though she’s not physically strong (she’s actually rather scrawny, and will be the first to admit that she has chicken legs), she is a powerful magician.

Faust, the love interest of Patience, is a Shadowspawn faerie. How is his type different from other faeries? He watched as his outcast clan dwindled to nothing. How did they die? What did he do to stop their deaths? How was Faust spared? What powers or qualities enable him to protect Patience?

Shadowspawn faeries have been kicked out of Faerie for acts of great evil, but Faust himself is innocent of the crimes that resulted in his clan being banished. Most of his clan mates were picked off by stronger magical creatures (like demons), but some fell on their swords out of grief. Faust survived because he’s clever, powerful and wise enough to keep his nose out of magician politics. Until now. He’s prepared to move heaven and earth to keep Patience safe, because she is the one bright spot in his life.

Briefly describe the chemistry between Patience and Faust. What qualities do they admire/desire in each other?

Patience and Faust balance each other in many ways. He’s a voice of reason, while she tends to rush in where angels fear to tread. They both possess an affinity for fire—Patience is descended from a fire faerie from another clan, and Faust is a fire faerie—and that can make their relationship combustible. Faust admires her for her strength, determination and sense of honor, and Patience admires him for his loyalty, passion and charm.

When a particular old demon enemy punches through the barrier between the worlds, Patience must draw on every ounce of her reputation. To get rid of him for good, she’ll have to sacrifice one too many pieces of her soul to leave room for love. What makes this demon more formidable than the others?

The demon in this case is an ancient demon. He’s extremely powerful, and because of that she can’t do a simple banishing ritual to get rid of him like a normal demon. As the only summoner left in the area, Patience is the only one who can deal with him.

Briefly describe the magical systems of your world. How do those who are empowered (faeries, wizardkind, demons) gain their abilities?

In the Bad Witch books, magicians are born with magic in their blood, and they live apart from their non-magical (or “straight”) neighbors. There are nine types of magician: alchemists, guardians, librarians, necromancers, seers, shapeshifters, sorcerers, summoners, and witches. With the exception of necromancers, who learn their craft, a magician is born as one of these types and has only those abilities. Summoners deal with demons, trading favors for additional power. Witches are healers, alchemists brew potions, and so on. There’s a glossary included in Fire in the Blood for a crash course in the setting for people who haven’t read the previous books, or as a refresher for those who have.

Excerpt from Fire in the Blood:

“You still haven’t eaten,” Harvey reminded after I hung up the phone.
“Drive through. Don’t let me forget.”
“You said that this morning.”
“I did?” I asked in surprise.
“Yes, you did.”
Damn it all to hell and back, my brain must really be fried, because I had zero memory of that. At least I’d been chugging black coffee all day, so there was something in my system, even if it was only caffeine. I couldn’t keep up this pace for much longer, but I didn’t have a choice. I was the only one left to handle the demon problem. I’d tried to call in extra help from the coasts, and everyone turned me down. They were too afraid of the hunters, and though I couldn’t blame them for that, it still pissed me off. I outsourced what work I could to the local guardians, but it wasn’t enough. They weren’t specialists like me.
I was trying to bail out the Titanic with a teaspoon. It was only a matter of time before we all drowned.
“Well, this time I mean it,” I said lamely.
“Of course, Mistress.”
I grabbed my black cashmere coat from the rack and donned it along with my scarf, then slung my messenger bag over my shoulder. This time I made it halfway across the room before I was stopped, but it wasn’t the phone that interrupted me. It was a faerie invasion, and I had only a moment to recognize Faust by the smoky lenses of his round, dark glasses before he pounced on me. He kissed me fiercely and nudged me back until I stumbled into the front of my desk.
“I dislike this overcoat. It’s much too bulky.” He reached for the buttons and I batted his hand away.
“I’ll be in the car, Mistress,” Harvey called out loudly before vanishing. He’s not a voyeur, and he disapproved of my relationship with Faust. I didn’t approve of my relationship with Faust either. Every summoner knows you shouldn’t get involved with a faerie, because it always ends badly.
“Cut it out. I’m on a call,” I warned.
Faust grinned, and my chest tightened with an emotion I fought not to show. Yes, this was headed toward disaster, but I couldn’t help myself. Faust was the most addictive temptation I’d ever met. He was just so damn pretty—tall for a faerie, which made him about my height, and dark haired with a pale complexion that spoke more of a vampire than a faerie. Faust had an angular face with high, sharp cheekbones that reminded me a bit of a runway model, a finely-drawn brow and a smile that could make a girl weak in the knees in 0.5 seconds.
“It can’t wait,” he insisted. “I’ve missed you.”
He tugged my scarf aside and kissed my neck, and it was suddenly much too warm to be wearing my coat. I didn’t fight him as he unbuttoned the garment and slid it off. I kissed him and indulged in the lovely diversion of letting his nimble hands roam for a few moments, because the past few days had been all business and no pleasure. But I had an appointment to keep, and I pushed him away with a disappointed sigh.
“I missed you too, babe, but I don’t have time for a break. I’m on call 24/7 now.”
“I know you are.” Faust’s expression sobered, and he caressed my cheek. “You’re a brave woman, Patience, and I admire that about you. But that’s also why I’m here.”
“You’re here because you admire me? Funny, seemed more like desire a second ago,” I teased. The corners of his mouth twitched, and I bit back the urge to kiss him. Experience had taught me that if I encouraged him I’d end up naked and bent over the desk.
“There’s a problem—” he began, and I cut him off.
“I don’t have time for more problems. We’re all full up here.”
“This is serious. Zachary has hired someone to kill you.”
