How Old Is Too Old for Romance? ~guest post by Karin Rita Gastreich, author of Daughter of Aithne

How Old Is Too Old for Romance?
guest post by Karin Rita Gastreich

Recently, one of my critique partners expressed surprise that my current work in progress, a paranormal romantic thriller, features a protagonist in her mid-forties.

Unusual, I know, but not entirely unheard of. Romance protagonists are getting older by the day – just like the rest of us!

Still, while the RWA reports that romance readers have a median age of about 44, most romance protagonists continue to hover in their mid 20s or early 30s. Paranormal, in particular, favors the young and the innocent.

At first glance, this may not seem relevant to my current medieval fantasy release, Daughter of Aithne. But as it turns out, my co-protagonists, Eolyn and Taesara, buck the same trend, albeit within their own world.

Taesara is in her late twenties at the start of the novel, and Eolyn in her mid-thirties. Sounds young? Well, keep in mind that both of them live in the context of a patriarchal, medieval society, and as a result, both women are considered well past their prime. Thirty is the medieval forty, after all. And forty…Well, why even bother getting to forty in medieval times? Better to die in childbirth and be remembered as the young, spritely maiden you once were.

It’s an odd phrase, “past her prime.” Prime for whom? Or for what?

By what right does anyone define the prime of a woman?

When Daughter of Aithne begins, Taesara of Roenfyn has bought into the cultural myth that she is past her prime. Years ago, she suffered through an arranged marriage that ended in divorce. Deep down, she blames and punishes herself for her ex-husband’s decision to cast her out.

Taesara has a teenage daughter, Eliasara, whose hand in marriage is offered to Savegre, a warrior prince from the neighboring realm of Galia. Savegre is more than twice Eliasara’s age, which by most medieval standards, would make him the perfect match. But he grew up in a very different culture, and he scoffs at the idea of marrying Eliasara.

Entrenched in her own world view, Taesara assumes Savegre thinks her daughter unworthy, but the Galian tells her point blank, “A true man does not bring little girls into his bed. A true man requires a woman whose beauty is shaped not by youth, but by experience.”

This exchange proves a turning point for Taesara. By looking through the lens of another culture, she is able to recognize she does not need to conform to the expectations thrust upon a woman of her age. The many years she has lived and the pain she has experienced are not liabilities but strengths. Not only does she possess beauty, she can command power. The future is still in her hands.

Armed with this new awareness, Taesara succeeds not only in opening her heart to the possibility of new romance, but also finds the courage to fight for her own claim to the throne.

Taesara discovers a secret many women take too long to realize: no matter what our age, we are always in our prime. A woman’s “prime” is defined not by her years but by her capacity to dream, to fight for what she believes in, and to love with courage and grace – abilities that grow stronger with time, as we rise above the inevitable disappointments of life and move forward with renewed hope.

"Vigorously told deceptions and battle scenes...with a romantic thread." -Publishers Weekly review of Eolyn, Book One of the Silver Web

“Lush, evocative descriptions carry readers through an unforgettable journey.” –Kirkus Reviews review of Sword of Shadows, Book Two of the Silver Web.

Excerpt ONE:

Taesara left the kitchen and climbed the narrow stairs that led to the Mother’s study and a handful of chambers set aside for receiving guests from the outside world. The rest of the cloister was stark in its furnishings and modest in decoration, but here the chairs and tables were finely carved. Tapestries graced the walls with images of men and women called by Thunder during the long and difficult history of Taesara’s people.
When she entered the study, the man standing at the window wheeled about and pinned her with a stern gaze. His long face was framed by graying hair, his sage cloak richly embroidered with silver threads.
“My Lord Regent.” Taesara sank to her knees, deeply troubled by this unannounced visit.
A rustle of skirts indicated the Mother’s approach. The old woman laid a frail but steady hand on Taesara’s shoulder. “If it pleases you, Lord Regent, I will take my leave now, so that you may speak with your niece.”
Taesara looked up at the Mother with a mixture of hurt and trepidation. “Dear Mother, I have no family in this world, not since I—”
“Hush, my daughter.” The Mother took Taesara’s face in her hands and studied her with kind eyes. “I know the vows you took when you entered this place better than you. I do not doubt the devotion with which you have served the Gods as part of our community these many years. Your family has indeed been dead to you, but now Thunder wishes to call you back to the world of the living. Listen to your uncle, for he seeks to resurrect your heart from its grave. The news he bears will bring you much joy.”
“But I don’t want—”
“Know that whatever you decide, you have my blessing.” The Mother kissed Taesara and left, closing the door quietly behind her.
Taesara lowered her gaze to the floor, burdened by a terrible uncertainty she had not felt in years.
Sylus Penamor, Lord Regent of Roenfyn, strode forward and extended a gloved hand to his niece. “Rise, Taesara.”
She obeyed, stiffening as Penamor took her chin in his fingers and subjected her to cold inspection. After a moment, his frown deepened and he shook his head. “Only the Sisters of the Poor could take a woman at the height of her flower and turn her into a dried-up weed.”
Taesara bristled. “There is no place for vanity within these walls.”
“Apparently not. They’ve made you skinny and sallow. Though it is nothing, I’ll wager, that a bit of sun and some proper food cannot remedy. What are these rags they dress you in?”
She stepped away, clenching her jaw. “This is all I need. All anyone needs, to live at peace in this world.”
Penamor snorted. “Indeed.”
“Why are you here?”
“I’ve come to fetch you home.”
“This is my home.”
“This was your temporary refuge. A foul place, but one of your choosing. We were generous enough to let you stay, first your father and then I, as we put the outside world in order. Now it is time for you to return.”
“I am not going back.”
“Oh, but I think you will.” Penamor spoke with an odd tone, at once menacing and full of promise. “War is at hand, and you will be the one to lead it.”
Taesara forced a laugh. “You know I will have no part of it. Eliasara would die at their hands if we so much as—”
“They do not have Eliasara,” he said. “We do.”
Shadows flashed through Taesara’s vision. She stumbled and caught hold of the back of a chair. A chasm opened inside her heart, swallowing the vines and trees with which she had concealed her love and pain during all these years. The bitter flood of anguish returned full force.
“Where is she?” Taesara did not look at her uncle, her mind consumed by the image of King Akmael’s stony countenance, his dark intent, his merciless heart.
“About a day’s ride from here. She has been asking for you.”
“Is she…whole? Have they harmed her in any way?”
“Do you mean have they turned her into a witch? No. Eliasara is a true daughter of Roenfyn. She has remained faithful to her memory of you, and to the convictions of her people. And she is beautiful, Taesara, as lovely as you were at her age, with the same sweet smile and golden hair.”
“She will not recognize me. She had only just begun to walk when we were separated.”
“She will know who you are. That is enough. She wants a mother to love, and one who will love her. She needs you, Taesara.”
Unable to endure the weight of the moment, Taesara sank to the floor. Oh, sweet Thunder, help me.
“What is this unbearable work of the Gods?” she asked. “How has such a thing come to pass?”
“That is an amusing story to tell.” Penamor knelt at her side. The smell of leather and horse stung her senses. “The wizard Tzeremond often said that the magas always betray their own, and so that old hawk’s wisdom has once again proven true. The Witch Queen’s greatest student, a maga warrior by the name of Ghemena, broke into Eliasara’s prison with two of her companions. They slew the Mage King’s guards and brought the Princess to Roenfyn, to me. Now the magas stand with us, ready to fight.”
Fire surged through Taesara’s veins.
“Who else?” she demanded. “Who else stands with Roenfyn?”
“Galia has agreed to support our cause, and new messengers have been dispatched to Antaria. We await their response. We also have allies inside Moisehén: noble families whose loyalty I have cultivated in secret; mages who pretend to serve King Akmael; and others among the Witch Queen’s guard who are anxious to see the line of Mage Kings dissolved. This is our moment, Taesara. Your moment. To exact vengeance on the King of Moisehén and his villainous harlot, to kill their bastards, and to see your daughter and all her descendants claim the Crown of Vortingen.”
Taesara straightened her back, withdrawing from her uncle’s grasp and taking deep breaths as she tried to steady her pulse.
After a long moment, she leveled her gaze at him. “I don’t care about any of that, Uncle. All I want is to see my daughter.”
A smile of triumph touched his lips. “As well I knew you would.

The Romantic Leads of Eolyn’s World
By Karin Rita Gastreich

“A maga cannot be possessed by any man, and she will love many, if the Gods look upon her with favor before they call her home.” –Briana of East Selen

Marsha A. Moore’s invitation to be a guest on her blog has inspired the romantic in me.

Earlier this week on my tour, I wrote about aen-lasati, the magic of love and attraction. In Eolyn’s world, aen-lasati remains the exclusive domain of the gods. It is their decision when and where to weave the threads of desire. Magas are taught to honor this magic, and therefore may have multiple partners during their life time.

In the novel EOLYN, one man stands above the rest and tends to pull on Eolyn’s heartstrings more than any other.  Nonetheless, there are many who cross her path and ignite the fires of aen-lasati. Today, I’ll introduce you to three of these romantic leads: Prince Akmael, Tahmir of the Syrnte, and Mage Corey of East Selen.

Akmael, Prince of Moisehén

Fate, along with a touch of magic, brings Eolyn and Akmael together as children in the South Woods. The bonds of friendship they establish there will last a lifetime, through war, persecution, suffering, and division. Yet their destiny as lovers is far from certain.

Unknown to Eolyn, Akmael is the son of Kedehen, a man of royal lineage who defied an age-old prohibition and learned the ways of magic. Convinced that knowledge of magic should never be granted to royalty, the Magas rose up against Kedehen when he assumed the throne. After a long and terrible war, Kedehen secured his victory and began to systematically annihilate his opponents, including all women practitioners of magic.

One maga was spared from these purges. During the massacre of her Clan, Briana of East Selen was captured by Kedehen and made his queen. Shortly thereafter, Briana bore Kedehen his only son and heir, Akmael.

Akmael is gifted in both magic and warfare. He bears the same dark features and stocky build of his father. He also inherited a tendency to brood and a temper that can be quick and ruthless. Loyalty to his father’s legacy, coupled with a deep awareness of duty to people and crown, guides Akmael’s every decision. When the young prince’s heart is captured by Eolyn,he finds himself torn between the will of the Mage King and the desire to keepEolyn safe. He also longs to claim Eolyn as his own, though deep down he knows that as a maga, she can never be bound to one man.

Tahmir of the Syrnte

Eolyn meets Tahmir when she joins Mage Corey’s Circle, a travelling show that brings the illusion of magic to the people of Moisehén. Tahmir and his sister Rishona hail from a distant land on the other side of the Paramen Mountains. Their people are powerful warriors that rule the high plains and have extended their empire far into eastern and southern realms.

The Syrntecommand a mysterious form of magic that allows them to see past, present, and future as a single entity. Under certain circumstances, they can also hear the thoughts and desires of others.

Tahmir is a charmer. He embodies grace and power; think of the movement of a black leopard, and you will have captured the spirit of Tahmir. Needless to say, Eolyn quickly falls under his spell. Although she is not the only woman of the circle infatuated with Tahmir, he soon favors her above all others.

There are hidden dangers to this attraction.Tahmir harbors his own secret ambitions for the future of Moisehén. Eolyn senses this, but she its them slide for the moment. After all, nothing makes for a more irresistible mix than intense sensuality spiced with an aura of mystery.

Mage Corey of East Selen

Cousin to Akmael’s mother Queen Briana, Corey was born to a family of magas and mages that ruled the eastern province of Moisehén.  When his clan was massacred by the Mage King Kedehen, Corey was a very small child. He escaped thanks to the intervention of Briana, who begged Kedehen to spare the boy’s life.

At once a prisoner and adopted son of the royal family, Mage Corey struggles with conflicting motivations.  On the one hand, he desires vengeance for the obliteration of his clan. On the other hand, he is bound by loyalty to the few individuals who still share his bloodline, among them Briana’s and Kedehen’s only son, Akmael.

Corey and Eolyn first meet under the auspices of his Circle, when he hires her as one of his performers. The mage recognizes Eolyn’s importance early on, but he holds this knowledge – as he does many things – in secret. Much time will pass before Eolyn fully understands the true extent of Corey’s power, and what his influence and ambitions will eventually mean for her.

The chemistry between Eolyn and Corey crackles with tension. Their relationship is one of constant disagreement, wary admiration, and latent attraction. Although Corey might be considered a minor character, his fate is tightly intertwined with Eolyn's. The final outcome of the saga, to be revealed in the third book Daughter of Aithne, will depend crucially on the resilience of their besieged friendship.
