The blue hippos are out again! I’m not sure why, but they are. I first saw this pair during a warm spell in the beginning of January, along a secluded rocky bank while I was kayaking. After a cold snap, I was able to get out on the water again. There they were, but this time on a sand beach—quite obvious near the boat landing.
Usually they’re hard to find, and only
spotted here in Florida in the spring during their mating season. This pair, dangerously
throwing caution to the wind with their conspicuous location for an extra
friendly visit, does look like they’re getting a jump on things. The male is
definitely strutting his stuff with that huge double horn. And her ears are
flared out so wide, it looks like she’s drinking him in with her senses. Ah,
love!
