Tea Leaf Tale: Delbert Daisy’s Sunglasses

Apparently not everyone likes long summer days. For Delbert, time dragged between Solstice and the Lammas Harvest Sabbat and finally Labor Day—the dog days. Days when his petals drooped and his sap bubbled. The sun, such a good friend months ago, had turned fickle, now hellbent on scorching everyone it had earlier coaxed to grow.
When the girl from the house came outside to play in the garden with her dolls, Del spied some relief. A doll-size pair of shades to block those cruel rays. When she turned to another toy, he bent low, stem almost to the breaking point, but was just able to snatch those sunglasses off the doll’s face. Carefully manipulating the frame using his petals, he positioned the glasses on himself as the doll had worn them. He lifted to the top of the clump, face beaming toward the noonday sun and exclaimed, “Hey, you ball of fire up there, bring it on!”
As the rest of the daisies whispered technical stuff he didn’t understand about “no UV light protection,” Del stretched higher, his golden center broad and glowing like the sun itself.

Tea Leaf Tales: Harbinger of spring in a pinstriped pinafore

So stalwart is she, forcing through the dense carpet of last year’s leaves packed hard by winter’s wrath. A harbinger to the winter-weary hordes of beast and man alike, she offers reassurance that the season of cold and snow is passing and life is returning.
Early spring is the season of small but mighty flowers, not to be overlooked. Dainty, yes, but fragile, no. She and her sisters endure frigid nights and heavy rains of the changing season, closing their delicate blossoms tight. Her slender stems dissuade ants and bend to the harshest winds.
Compared to far gaudier blossoms who arrive in the relative ease of late spring, she earns her vainglorious name through sheer tenacity. Small in size but large in numbers, she will march from her woodland home into towns and across lawns.
Her white petals glisten in the sunshine, and faint pink lines guide the season’s first bees into her blushing nectar. Some think of her as an innocent little girl wearing a pinstriped pinafore, and others know her as tasty miner’s lettuce, but most delight in her as their Spring Beauty.

Tea Leaf Tales: The Chosen Rabbit

When the sun melted the snow from the ground and grey clouds from the sky, Patches knew. His nose twitched with anticipation, more each day as the sun scented the air with fragrant flowers and fresh green growth.
His parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins had told him the tale of the great Goddess Eostre, who he’d not seen because her last coming occurred just prior to his birth, as was the case with many young ones. A beautiful vision of white light and long, flowing golden hair, she would arrive in the forest glade with much fanfare on Ostara Equinox Day for an extended celebration. They all said it was an honor to be one of her chosen, though they’d not been selected to serve as her emissaries so how could they know? What had happened to the privileged ones from past years? They never returned to the forest.
When Goddess Eostre did arrive, the glade teemed with hundreds of rabbits from all corners of the forest, all vying for her recognition, but Patches hung at the edge, watching and apprehensive, for many days.
On the tenth and final day, after dozens had been chosen, Eostre strolled the perimeter chatting with those old ones she remembered from years past.
As she drew near, Patches trembled at her beauty and magnificence, but when her hand stroked his back with a warmth that permeated love deep into his heart, she instilled him with all the courage and resolve he needed to fulfill his role at her Easter sunrise.

Tea Leaf Tales: The Duty of the First Flower

During past weeks, in her dark enclave she had heard his whispered promise. Almost too good to believe, of renewed spirit and beauty beyond measure. Tendrils of his warmth tempted her to believe.
And she did believe. The first flower of spring pushed through the ponderous soil and cracked the frozen surface using her tender shoot protected with little but pride. Finally free, she sought his warm, loving touch, and reassurance, which weren’t denied.
“You are the first, which is both honor and duty, for you must now call to the others.”
First flower expanded her delicate aura, casting energy in wider halo. She radiated in shades ranging from transparent to gray to white and even a regal crown of gold, matching the varied angles of his rays. But while he ebbed and flowed, she held steadfast, and soon others heeded her signal, who, in turn, engaged more, until a blanket of fresh growth sang a bright song of green on Equinox Day.

Tea Leaf Tales: Grandfather’s Magical Whisk Broom

Spring always speaks to me of cleaning, whispering to let go of heavy emotional baggage, shouting to throw out household clutter and dirt. I keep many brooms that serve different cleaning functions, most of which confuse my husband the few times he chooses to sweep. Brooms are not all the same, but all deserve due respect for their service.
This particular one is quite special, my father’s and grandfather’s whisk broom. Its long history has accumulated magic, and the stubby but sturdy broom continues to serve us from its well-earned position on my bookcase shelf of treasured American literature, not performing mundane cleaning chores. It deserves honor and reverence.
Magical brooms need special care and should be treated like family. Never leave home for long periods of time without notifying that broom. Always greet it by rubbing your hand over the entire staff and length of the bristles. The more attention, the more magic.

Tea Leaf Tales: Flamingo Hearts of Love

“Come on, Peaches,” Titian begged for the tenth time.
“No, everyone will laugh, especially my parents since we aren’t the same color.”
“But I love you and it’s Valentine’s Day,” he urged, but she shook her head.
Titian bravely positioned himself between her and the flock, waiting for the right moment when the others had grazed their way across the pond.
“This isn’t safe to be alone with gators around,” Peaches said and ruffled the graceful pale feathers of her wing tips.
“Don’t you trust me?” he asked, lifting off, calling her bluff as a test of her love.
His heart swelled when she followed him into the air, across the stand of trees, and to a tiny hidden inlet off the bay, his secret place he shared with no one, but today was special, she was special. He dipped his bill into the warm, shallow water, scooped a mouthful of brine shrimp, and passed it to his sweetheart.
Through the afternoon, he stood guard, while she dined and the hue of her feathers deepened.
At sunset, they rejoined the flock and the other couples, already positioned beak to beak and neck to neck in perfectly matched hearts.

Tea Leaf Tales: A new breakthrough in Renewable Energy—SEA COW STOVES!

Join the green revolution and heat your home with SAFE, CLEAN FLORIDA SUNSHINE!

In answer to the demand for renewable energy sources, Manatee Megacorp has developed this amazing new product—the Sea Cow Stove. It is powerful enough to comfortably heat an entire warehouse or the smallest bedroom thanks to a photosensitive thermostat.

During winter along Florida’s Gulf Coast, this natural concept has been secreted for centuries by sea cows in order to survive plummeting water temperatures without need to fully hibernate. Recently discovered in manatee preserves, this heat source is a careful amalgam of seaweed and bacteria in a symbiotic energy exchange system initiated by exposure to strong UV index 10 wavelengths.

Reproduced by Manatee Megacorp, the luminescence is safe and releases no toxic fumes, noxious odors, or harmful by-products. The Sea Cow Stove, patent pending, passes all federal safety standards. The device works best if located near a source of natural light—low to high sunlight or even moonlight—to maintain the symbiosis.

Manatee Megacorp is looking for volunteers to test this product in a variety of climates. The first fifty people to respond to this ad will also receive a smaller car version. Note: best used in cars parked outdoors.

Tea Leaf Tales: Vintage Radios Play the Best Music

I recently strolled through a wonderful antique shop, clearly owned by a dealer of vintage dreams who had a remarkable collection of old radios. A great mishmash of models, arranged in no particular order, spanned decades from the Twenties to the Seventies. Surprisingly, most were plugged in, and a nearby sign read “Whatever you turn on, please kindly turn off.”

With that invitation, I couldn’t resist and chose what I guessed to be the oldest, in a large beat up wood housing. With a click and slight clockwise turn of its power knob, the device hissed static, and I tuned the station knob to locate the only one that picked up, playing a man sweetly crooning “Ain’t Misbehavin.” I swayed for a minute with the pretty melody, then shut off that radio and tried a curvy wood veneered one that got my foot tapping to Glenn Miller’s big band brassy “In the Mood.” Next, a silky voiced female sang “Sentimental Journey” from a sleek metal and wood player, while an apple green Bakelite transistor shot out all Elvis, all the time from every station. An ivory-blonde, handled portable, stained orange from sunscreen, hopped to the Beach Boys “Good Vibrations,” and a simple, black plastic hand-held model nearly dropped off the shelf with the heavy guitar crunch of “Smoke on the Water.”

Excited and overwhelmed by my discovery, I had to buy one, but which? Unable to decide, I settled for the last two because they left me with that feel-good vibe of childhood…and I hoped there would still be magic playing from future vintage models for millennials and generations after to enjoy the same way.

Tea Leaf Tales: Vixen’s Hunt for Christmas Tree Demons

Vixen held back and didn’t even nip at Jean and Eric when they positioned a pine tree near the living room’s heat duct, her mid-morning resting spot. Although she pretended to be upset, the tree actually provided her hours of exciting challenge and real purpose since it was loaded with shiny, twirling birds, squirrels, and other curious varmints that must be conquered. Come night, under cover of the darkness, in stealth predator mode, she sprang at a grinning pink demon and, with one masterful swat, knocked it to the floor and squeezed out its last traces of evil.
The next morning, Eric yelled, “Cat, you do that again and your name will be worse than a nasty-tempered little vixen.” He shooed her away with his slippered foot, and muttered guttural sounds as he pushed the tree from where it rested against the couch. Why wasn’t she rewarded with hours of tummy rubs and Fancy Feast for dinner? Despite what Eric thought, she’d never caused any harm during her heroic missions.
That afternoon, while Vixen sulked in a sunny patch near the front door, a card zipped through the slot. On it a hefty man in a red suit waved, and printed beneath his proud team of antlered deer she read, “Join Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, and Rudolph for Santa’s Christmas parade.” At last, some real appreciation, she thought and stood vigilent for the friendly white-bearded man to arrive.

Tea Leaf Tales: Why didn’t the farmer tell his barn?

The old barn let out a wheeze, barely audible above a ribbon of icy wind whipping between bare tree branches, and with that first breath of winter, the roof sagged lower. The paired dormer windows blinked then shut tight, braced against far worse than today’s chill breeze, which only tickled my nose and lifted a few strands of my hair without any success at stealing heat from underneath my scarf.
From where I walked along the road, I heard the sleeping tractor sputter and rattle with loud snores while dreaming about a soft blanket of snow, yet despite the machine’s peaceful slumber, gray air hung heavy around the farmyard thick with suffering, dread, and sadness. The barn shuddered and coughed frosty fog from its gaping mouth, now so distorted its doors could not offer protection.
I stepped around clumps of tall grass to the barn’s front wall. Unable to resist touching the wood, weathered silvery and smooth with immeasurable wisdom, I trailed my fingers along the grain, but the board flinched away. Had the farmer not told his barn what he shared with me last week at the market?
I shook my head in disbelief that I was among the few who respected the earth and the things which were made from her. I flattened a palm against a board stippled with richly hued patina, leaned close, and whispered, “There is nothing to fear because after the coming winter, your lovely planks and beams will be reclaimed by a young couple eager to honor you in the home they are building to raise their family.”
A long, sweet sigh billowed from the barn’s mouth, and with a nod and a smile, I continued on my walk, satisfied that the journey had been more than worthwhile.

Tea Leaf Tales: Bobby Bear’s Post-Hallows Anger Management

Still on guard after a rough Halloween, Bobby couldn’t get his anger under control. With nerves on edge, he flinched and roared at everything that crossed his path.
Accustomed to being Lead Toy in Corey D. Daniels’ collection, Bobby expected life to be easy. For years it had been, until All Hallows Eve when he accompanied Corey into a kids’ maze in search of candy. They rounded a turn, and a tiny ghoul, no bigger than Corey, burst out from a quiet, dark corner. The scare caused Bobby to fly from Corey’s hand, through the air, and outside the maze where a pack of menacing goblins surrounded him. Bobby gnashed his teeth, which kept his growling attackers from ripping him to shreds until they relented and left him alone in a strange place.
There, he watched for Corey to find him, but after many days, the unthinkable truth burned through his mind—he wasn’t Lead Toy.
A falling acorn pummeled his back. He spun and snarled, then snapped his jaw shut and sputtered, “Got to get a grip or I’ll blow it with Santa, and I must be Lead Toy again.”

Tea Leaf Tales: Blood Moon May Cause Harmful Circulation Changes

It had never started with his feet; usually hair prickled slowly through the skin of his chest and belly where no one could see the change, so Mort had grown lacadaisical about checking moon rise times. Fur poked through his feet so thick, he had to remove his sneakers or circulation would cut off.
After the guy next to him said, “Cool Halloween costume, bro,” Mort nodded and touched a hand to his ball cap, a good excuse to pass a hand over his face. Only the normal whisker stubble. Not wanting to chance getting on the bus without something to hide behind, he strode to the newspaper stand and bought a copy.
Mort took a seat again and caught a horrific glimpse of his toes, now extending beyond the fur with heavy claws. He snapped the paper open against long wiry hairs protruding from his nose, where an article proclaimed, “Scientific study reveals that lunar gravitational change of today’s full Blood Moon may cause harmful circulation changes in persons who have blood disorders.”
Mort checked and then removed his watch straining under thickening hair growth. He dashed into the Dollar Store next door, bought a plastic pumpkin bucket filled with cookies, and barely made back to catch the bus, where he offered treats to the passengers. With growls erupting from his chest, he stuffed his mouth with a cookie and sank onto a seat, thankful the month was October.

Tea Leaf Tales: Tricycle Terminator

With the leaves falling, Christmas would come soon, and that meant one thing to Tyler Shepperd—asking Santa for a bicycle, not a tricycle, a real two-wheeled dirt bike like his big brother Shawn rode. Tyler had already asked and been turned down by Mom, then Dad, and Grampa, although he might be able to wear down Gramma if he could tolerate sitting in her lap a few more times. All the others said six was too young, he wasn’t ready, maybe for his seventh birthday next summer, which was too late for Tyler. The one person he was sure wouldn’t turn him down was Santa.

But just in case Mom or Dad got to Santa first before Tyler could hand him his letter, when he saw him at the mall in December, he had a plan. Before it got too cold, he would ride the old trike he hated more than his younger sister Emma until the wheels dropped off or the frame bent worse than Dad could repair, even with Grampa’s help and magic tools.

Every day after school, rain or shine, Tyler took to the leafy sidewalks, skidding out and slamming the tricycle into tree trunks. After weeks and many bruises, a shadowy figure jumped across his path. Frightened, Tyler collided with a loud thud into an old oak that set one of his rear wheels wobbling. He picked himself up, watched the shadow man return to a high branch, and the faint jiggle of a sleigh bell made Tyler smile.

Tea Leaf Tales: Have you met the Watermelon Warrior?

Winnie Walters chopped and mixed her fruit salad for the neighborhood Labor Day block party.

Even though she’d received the sign-up form late, no one claimed her specialty. For the last fling of summer, everyone wanted Winnie’s salad. Her sweet elixir brought to mind the magic of heady jasmine-scented June nights with dizzying white blooms that made neighbors swarm her fruit like a hive of honey bees.

On the blustery Saturday afternoon when Winnie arrived at the party carrying two heaping bowls, many cheered while others gaped.

One woman peeled two squirming elementary-aged kids from her side, held out an empty plate, and pleaded, “Look at you: summer goddess. Dish me up some of your inner peace to get me through until school starts.”

Winnie planted her feet in a wide stance, twirled a long-handled serving spoon, let out a piercing yell, then filled the woman’s dish. “This is no goddess headdress, but the helmet of a warrior—defender of fruit through Crone’s Summer and Blackberry Winter.”

The woman savored the salad’s sweet flavor and sparkling magic, shared some with her children, and after the meal the serene golden glow of Indian Summer warmth blanketed the neighborhood.

Tea Leaf Tales: How long will the magic in Arthur Slipdeal’s microplants last?

Those who know Arthur Slipdeal watch every change of season with great anticipation and vie to predict the results of his next enterprise.

Something about the weather, a scent or spell carried by a fresh breeze, seems to perk Arthur’s zest and catapults his enthusiasm.

Oblivious to the cold, he’d met last winter head on hawking buck-naked underwear for total freedom of mind and movement, then copper-threaded knee braces to banish every ache and pain, and finally one pillow to please the world of sleepers. Each new product was a sure hit and his future to being rich…until it didn’t, and he wasn’t.

Undeterred, the start of this spring has him hopping with a new sales idea, the best ever, with magic enough to blind and bind them all—microgardening. Certain to sell, following hot on the heals of the popular microbrewing trend. And for those inclined to myth and legend, Arthur has a different sales pitch. What could be better than plants that will attract real fairies to a garden, wonderful for gardeners and fantasy-lovers alike. With appeal to so many varied customers, how could he fail?

Those keeping tabs on Arthur’s endeavors are taking bets on the longeveity of the tiny plants’ magic, some expecting it to defy frost and even freeze, while others say it’ll wilt in the first summer heat—so get your wagers in soon.

Tea Leaf Tales: Umbrella Spa

“I’m so glad you could keep our date, my dear,” Brolly said as he aligned his ribs and hopped on his cap to make space.
Veridana shivered, spread her leaf-green canopy in the sunshine, and replied, “I sooooo needed this after the workout I had last weekend. Thought I felt that dreadful chill of mold settling into my shaft.”
“You poor, poor thing, but I can most certainly empathize. Even with my stout wood, those fearsome gales turned ribs out past my stretchers and threatened to steal me away.”
     “Oooh my! Didn’t that hurt?”
“Not to worry. Banged and bruised, but still on duty.”
“You’re my tough guy,” Veridana cooed and fluttered her webbing next to his.

Tea Leaf Tales: A Mantis Mother’s Lament

Praxy Manette landed on a smooth rock, made comfortably warm by the late autumn sun, but a chill breeze ruffled the tips of her hindwings as she worked them closed. She fastened prickled spines of her limbs to minute crevices till the sharp wind abated, then tilted her head and picked up Jack Frost’s song.
I knew he’d be comin’ soon, but all’s done that need’s doing. Eggs are laid on the strong and study stem of a ditch milkweed I spent a week findin’, well out o’ harm’s way from the farmer in his field. All that a mother can do is hope her young will stay safe ’nough to hatch and that their first meals be close.
Praxy glanced back at the ditch, sighed, and scanned the road ahead as an old pickup rattled to a stop.
A man sucked on a white stick, then tossed it onto her rock, still smoldering.
Following the man’s actions, she took a puff and spewed out a raucous cough and lungful of fiery smoke. Jack’s a comin’ soon enough, so why’s that feller in such a rush? Wings lifted, she stroked them past each other, singing sweet notes only her unborn would know…her final farewell.

Tea Leaf Tales: Rooster Crossing ONLY!

"Slow down, Vern!" Selma clutched the dashboard of their old Ford.
"I know, same curve I've driven 'round since I was knee high to a grasshopper driving Pappy's tractor."
"Not that, you old fool, the rooster sign's what I meant," she scoffed at her husband, without a thought after fifty-some years of marriage that he'd half listen to her.
"Yeah, I reckon that's new all right. Chickens been crossing here from Murdock's to McCallister's for decades, so why'd they go and put up a sign to tell everyone who already knows it?"
"It's like I've been seeing on TV, all this political correctness must've made it out our way." In front of their car, Selma noticed a fat, dandy rooster crossing the road, and the dozen or more brood hens huddled together back a ways. "Strange, but it looks to me like them hens don't think they're allowed to cross no more."
Vern pointed to a sign on the Murdock's barn that read "NO EGGS" and shook his head. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
