What do you do with a cranky muse?

When does your writing muse demand a break? What sorts of diversions does she expect before she’ll calmly sit at the keyboard again?

Mine always seems to throw a fit after I finish edits on a manuscript. Once it’s submitted, she balks and doesn’t want to be near the computer. I guess I should consider myself lucky, since during the writing process, no matter how long, she’s compliant. I’ve heard some muses are cranky and must be bribed with chocolate cake. Mine just expects a treat after working hard. Seems fair enough.

After a new book submission, last week was her week to get away and see the real world. We did some spectacular things I’d wanted to do for at least a decade.

Jai Uttal
One night I attended a kirtan led by Jai Uttal and his percussionists. What’s a kirtan? It’s a traditional Indian spiritual group singing event, a sort of sing-a-long using names of Hindu gods and goddesses as well as other words of prayer. I’ve been a fan of his for about a decade and it was a rare treat for him to play here in Tampa. The event was held at the yoga studio The Lotus Pond, inside its lovely log cabin nestled within the woods. The room was warm and inviting with wool carpets on the floor and tapestries on the walls. Jai led us through three kirtan songs lasting nearly two and a half hours. The energy of lifting our voices together singing those devotional names and words was moving, inspiring, and relaxing. I'm including some pictures I took at the kirtan.

Later the same week, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend a master yoga class led by the world-famous instructor Shiva Rea. Sponsored by Yogani Studios of Tampa, it was held in the old Cuban Club of Ybor City. I went with a small group of awesome yoginis from my local yoga studio.

Shiva Rea
The theme of the evening was mandalas, circular Hindu and Buddhist art. In the ornate, old ballroom, our yoga mats were arranged in concentric circles around a center informal altar with statues of Hindu gods, candles, flowers, incense. Over 150 students practiced with her for more than two hours. The vinyasas (series of poses) flowed in circular patterns, again following the mandala theme. She was accompanied by a wonderful percussion band that kept us moving. My body embraced greater ranges of movement, and my senses drank in the aesthetic beauty—together it formed a holistic experience which was truly uplifting.

Natural lighting was utilized to add to the ambiance through the sunset hour, so photography was limited, but here are some pictures from the early hour of the event.
Julie, Angela, Marianne, me
It’s a very cool thing my muse refuses to write a few weeks during the year, so I get to do such neat things.

When does your writing muse demand a break? What sorts of diversions does she expect before she’ll calmly sit at the keyboard again? Muses are all different. Let me know about yours.

Marketing my book at a yoga studio open house?

Yes, indeed, and it was a great time!

Last Saturday I had the pleasure of joining the excitement at the Apollo Beach Yoga's Open House. I was invited by the owner, Julie Chavanu, to bring materials to showcase my latest book, Tears on a Tranquil Lake. I was pleased to speak with many folks who were interested in my book.

The event was lots of fun with new folks to meet and plenty of tempting foods to nibble. An introductory Tai Chi class was presented. Several teachers were on hand to discuss a variety of yoga styles. The studio has recently expanded into a wellness center, offering massage and reiki  therapies. Both therapists were available to demonstrate samples of their treatments. I received my introduction to Reiki--an intriguing experience. Very cool!

A wonderful way to spend a Saturday afternoon!

Jule Chavanu, owner, and Angela, both yoga instructors
Angela and April, awesome yoginis

It was a flash in the moonlight, a blur of motion like I’d never witnessed before. No human had the capacity to move like that. When I found myself face-to-face with him there in the meadow, I knew without a doubt that the journal was authentic. I knew that my grandfather hadn’t been crazy at all.

Because a foot away from me stood a vampire.

Sarah Brightman reads her grandfather's journal in stunned disbelief. What was once her grandfather's responsibility has passed to her father and now to her. She has become the Warden. Her life will never be the same.

This is part one of a three-part series. It is 31,880 words long.

How long did it take to write the book?

Three months.

What inspired you to write the book?

I’m a huge fan of the paranormal genre—mainly YA books, but I wanted to go a little older with my own characters.  I’ve been a vampire fiction fan for many years.  I first read “Interview with the Vampire” back in 1994, and I’ve been hooked on the genre ever since.

Where can we go to buy your book?

Excerpt and Commentary:

This was the one who had been sent against his will for bad behavior.  Acknowledging that fact would force me to admit that the whole idea of vampires could be real.  I shook myself mentally, still trying to deny the truth that was literally staring me in the face.

I straightened and raised my chin an inch before I replied.

“Why are you here?”  I asked coldly, my chilling tone giving me courage in the face of this unbelievable scenario.  I tried to steady my breath, drawing in slow, deep gulps of the cool night air.

He moved.  It was a flash in the moonlight, a blur of motion like I had never witnessed.  No human had the capacity to move like that.  When I found myself face-to-face with him there in the meadow, I knew without a doubt that the journal was authentic.  I knew that my grandfather had not been crazy at all.

Because a foot away from me stood a vampire.

My denial had reached its end.

Closer now, I could see the details that I had missed before.  His body seemed to be a solid mass of muscle, garbed in black jeans and a black V-neck T-shirt that emphasized the size of his biceps.  The human-looking frame and face might have brought my disbelief back in a tidal wave if it were not for the eyes.  The contrast between his dark slanting eyebrows and pale blue eyes was inhuman.  The sardonic half smirk of his hard-looking mouth revealed that the nature of the creature before me was far from friendly.

“Why am I here?”  He tilted his head slightly and raised a hand to rub his chin, “Hmm.  Let me think.” Snapping his fingers suddenly, he brightened up and stated sarcastically, “Oh yes!  Now I remember.  I’ve been imprisoned here.”  I watched him move casually away, his dark boots treading quietly in the nighttime stillness, “Either you’re not the brightest bulb in the room, or you haven’t read the journal yet.  Which is it?”
***

This is probably my favorite excerpt from the Vampire’s Warden.  These few paragraphs give you a very accurate idea of what Michael is all about.  He is arrogant, sarcastic, incredibly sexy and very dangerous.  Sarah has never met anyone like him before.  She certainly never imagined that she would end up being in charge of such a creature.  Sarah has a lot of questions that need answered, but can she trust him to give her the right answers?  Find out more by getting your own copy of The Vampire’s Warden.

I'm casting my characters from Tears on a Tranquil Lake in today's Now Starring Blogfest!

Today is all about the letter 'U' for UNDERWATER adventures, featuring my book turned magically into a screenplay for the "Now Starring Blogfest." I get to play casting director today!

My fantasy romance book, Tears on a Tranquil Lake, involves a love triangle/adventure among a mermaid, a merman, and a pirate captain.

My mermaid, Ciel, is a very caring, intelligent individual, searching deep within herself for her own unique meaning of happiness. Although caught between the affections of two men, she worries about her rejection hurting their feelings. I’d likely select an actress capable of some spunk, wittiness, and dimension alongside her caring gentleness. My choice would be Renee Zellweger.

For my pirate captain it was an easy choice--Johnny Depp. He’s one actor who can be convincing, charming, assertive, funny in a fantasy setting,  and plenty sexy all at the same time. I write fantasy romance and through five books, I have yet to not find a role for that man’s intriguing personality. The upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has mermaids! Yeah! Cannot wait!

For my merman, I needed a strong, sensitive type, more connected to his feelings than the aggressive pirate captain. He’s more supportive of Ciel’s uniqueness, but don’t be fooled, he fully intends to win her heart. My selection would be Orlando Bloom.

Tears on a Tranquil Lake:
What a surprise for a young woman, to find herself suddenly transformed into a mermaid.

Ciel’s first thought – track down the merman who changed her and make him reverse his magic.
Unable to find him, survival in her new world becomes paramount. She eagerly accepts help from a dashing pirate captain who takes a fancy to her, lavishing her with finery. When her merman does show up, he competes for her affection. One look into his eyes makes her life more complex -- he is her soul mate.

Which man will she choose – pirate captain or merman? Which life – human or mermaid? Caribbean adventures and dangers chase Ciel as she searches for decisions and the key to her happiness.

Warning: This book contains Haitian vodou, sultry wenches, foul-mouthed scalliwag pirates, overindulgence of fine Caribbean rum, and amorous encounters on deserted beaches.

My guest Michael J. Lee and his book My Frankentein

For today's A to Z Blogging Challenge, 'S' is for the Story of My Frankenstein, the new book by Michael J. Lee.

One lucky commenter will win a Kindle copy of My Frankenstein. Contest ends midnight EDT April 29th.

The sex kept coming and going.

True story.

I originally had two of the main characters hooking up early in the very first version of the story.

Then after notes from a friend I cut it down to just one scene. That scene was actually pretty violent and traumatic.

Then as I converted this story from a screenplay into a novel, my managers mentioned the YA market so I toned it down. It became the very model of a chaste romance like the first Twilight book. Of course YA doesn’t necessarily mean chaste.

But then as I got ready to put this on Kindle I decided to put back in one of the sex scenes. I kept the rough scene sexless because the emotions were already very raw, then I added another sex scene that I never considered.

In the end I wound up with a story that was decidedly hotter than the previous versions. But the sex had done something more just add a touch of spice. It actually became part of the theme.

The main reason I kept the traumatic scene from becoming a full on sexual assault was that I wanted the sex to be good in this story. I wanted it to be fulfilling and a breakthrough for the characters. That combined with the 19th Century setting helped deepen a theme I’d been working on.

The 19th Century was much more uptight about sex than we could possibly have dreamt of. Sure there were bawdy tavern songs and stuff like that but it’s a far cry from today’s very frank and open society. The main characters are already breaking several taboos. Sex is just another social norm that they choose to defy. Very importantly Eva’s attitude towards sex later in the story doesn’t change. She has some doubts about Viktor and what he’s doing but she doesn’t go back entirely and become a born again Puritan. She remains, maybe a little too idealistically, a liberated, ahead of her time, young woman. And her ability to be such a free thinker is very important later on. So in the end having the sex in there made Eva so much stronger than she had been in the earlier drafts.

I’m glad I stuck it back in there.

Pun.

Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Book Description:
In a small village in early 19th Century young Eva is enthralled by the new young baron, Viktor Frankenstein. Viktor promises to transform the traditional little town into a beacon of science and gives the book loving Eva access to his fantastic library. Eva becomes his student and assists him in a secret experiment, though she is kept in the dark about its ultimate aim. Soon after that Viktor introduces Eva to his “cousin” Adam. Adam is horribly disfigured with stitches running across his face. Viktor claims he is mute and simpleminded, but Eva takes pity on him and sets out to teach him to speak.…

What follows is a combination of tragic romance and classic horror as Eva is pulled between Viktor, who grows jealous and takes murderous steps to ensure his secret, and Adam, who possess tremendous strength and rage yet deep inside is innocent and vulnerable.

In his debut fantasy novel, Michael J. Lee retells the classic story by Mary Shelley as a dark romance with steampunk overtones.

'R' is for fine Caribbean RUM

How to Savor Fine Caribbean Rum

When you think of rum you immediately think of the Caribbean, lying back in a gently swaying hammock and watching the waves crash over the distant coral reef. Whether you are knocking back a shot of overproof in Kingston, drinking a pina colada in Old San Juan, or just relaxing with an Admiral Rodney in Rodney Bay. the Caribbean has been the home of rum for hundreds of years, from the dark days of slavery and plantations, the pirates and buccaneers, to the present days of exotic frozen cocktails enjoyed by tourists.

Two years ago, when I moved to the Tampa area, I was delighted to feel the vibe of the Caribbean seeping into the local atmosphere, and it inspired me to write. The result is my new fantasy romance book, Tears on a Tranquil Lake.

One of my favorite settings in the book takes place on the Haitian island of Tortuga, an unruly pirate hangout during the mid-1600s. My main character, a mermaid named Ciel, makes her first visit to the island and learns the wonders of drinking fine Caribbean rum, among many other pleasures and vices. She gets a lesson from her pirate friends in how best to enjoy some expensive aged blends.

In case you’re curious…after you pour the sample into the glass, lift it up to the light and check for clarity in the rum. Aged rums will have a golden or mahogany hue from their extensive aging in oak barrels. This color indicates what to expect when you taste it. Lighter rums tend to be lighter and drier, and darker rums richer and heavier in flavor. Once the rum is poured into the glass, give it an initial sniff from the far side of the glass. Master blenders use sense of smell the most when creating their rums. Then swirl the rum around in the glass. Now take another whiff of the rum to see if more of the aromas have been released by swirling. Some of the bouquets you may detect: wood; nuts; honey; spice; vanilla; cocoa; orange.

Now for the best part--tasting. Take a small sip and swirl it around your mouth. Let the rum linger on your tongue and then the rest of your mouth. After swallowing the rum, allow the taste to linger and assess the "finish" which will probably be your most important memory of the rum. The length of the "finish", how long the taste remains in your mouth and nose, tells a lot about the complexity of the rum. What did you taste? Oak, vanilla, molasses, caramel, fruit, cinnamon, spices, nutmeg, tobacco, coconut? How would you describe the rum--sweet, smooth, full-bodied, harsh, or well-balanced?

Come join Ciel in Tears on a Tranquil Lake, as she develops a palate for fine Caribbean rum and a few other pirate pleasures.

So tell me, what is your favorite brand of rum? Or favorite fancy mixed drink, alcoholic or non?

My guest Mysti Parker tells all about her new book, A Ranger's Tale

Today for the A to Z Blogging Challenge 'Q' is because I'm QUITE happy to welcome Mysti Parker here to talk about her new book, A Ranger's Tale.

A Tour of Tallenmere

Please join me on a little adventure into the world of Tallenmere, where A Ranger’s Tale and future books in the series takes place.

What is Tallenmere? It's a world of fantasy, of magic, of intrigue. Is it Tolkien-esque? Perhaps. But there are no orcs. Orcs are so overdone. And elves in Tallenmere aren't nearly as perfect and mysterious as Tolkien's elves. They don’t diminish and head into the west. Instead, they have more than a few skeletons in their tidy closets.

It’s a world in which my imagination can run wild. It's the stuff dreams and nightmares are made of. Epic romances can emerge as love at first sight, and terrible tragedy can happen in a flash.

In Tallenmere, you'll find elves—high elves, wood elves, dark elves. There are, of course, humans, that most rigorous and versatile of races. You'll see faeries, barbarians, dwarves, halflings, ogres, and trolls. You might even discover a secret race or two as the stories unfold. What you'll always find is romance, mingled with suspense, and you'll never know what situations the characters will find themselves in next.

We'll begin our journey of Tallenmere in its largest continent, the land of Innessa, named after the creator goddess of the high elves. So, remain seated, keep all appendages inside the vehicle, and secure any loose objects. It’ll be a fast ride!

Innessa is divided into four provinces. To the west lies Leogard, home to high elves, where A Ranger’s Tale begins. It's the largest province, and is ruled by the high elf King Leopold Vaeloria. The capital city, Leogard (yes, same as the province), can be seen for miles, surrounded by a towering white wall. Until Leopold's reign, Leogard was closed off to much of the world. Now, with Leopold's devotion to Omri, god of peace and tranquility, he has opened up the city to the rest of Tallenmere, and conducts his own crusades in nearby lands to bring Omri's peace to the hurting.

In the east is Faerion, home to faeries and dwarves. Its capital city of Faewood lies on the coast, a popular tourist destination, known for its music, architecture, and food. The Eastwood Mountains of Faerion are vast and mysterious, filled with some unusual creatures, some of which can be quite deadly.

To the north is the province of Hezral—cold, rocky, and home to some very hardy humans. They're fishermen and traders, and rumor has it they have a vampire problem.

In the south lie the swampy lands of Yggrich--home to warring bands of ogres and trolls. Every now and then, they emerge to cause problems in Leogard. Good scouts are needed to keep these uglies in check. Let’s just say it’s a good thing Caliphany learns to handle a bow.

In the Southern Sea, where the breezes are warm, we’ll end our tour on Tilliya Island, with its lush tropical landscape. Stroll along the white sandy beaches, through the green pastures of sheep farms, or take a picnic under the rustling branches of a willowvine tree. You might spot Caliphany and Galadin there. It’s one of their favorite places.

I hope you’ve enjoyed our brief tour of Tallenmere. Please feel free to post any questions you might have about our journey. I hope you’ll love the characters in my series as much as I do. Thank you for coming along!

Blurb:In the fantasy world of Tallenmere, the high elf, Caliphany Aranea, nearly a century old, has never been allowed to travel farther than a few miles out of the capital city of Leogard. Her father, Sirius, leads the Mage Academy, and after losing his only son, he expects Caliphany to take his place one day. The trouble is, she doesn't want to study magic and doubts she'll ever be as good a wizard as her father. She dreams of leaving Leogard to explore the world and strike out on her own--lofty goals for Sirius' daughter, who also happens to be King Leopold's niece.

When two brutes at Leogard Harbor attempt to kidnap her while she dreams of faraway lands, half-elf ship captain and ranger, Galadin Trudeaux, comes to her rescue. From their first chance encounter, to the finale, where Caliphany must decide where her heart truly lies, she and Galadin will face more adventure, more love, more heartache, than they ever thought possible. Through it all, they discover the power of forgiveness and of a love that stands the test of time.

Excerpt from Chapter 18:

Galadin

Cali stood and flung her bow over her shoulder.

I waved my hands at her. “Cali, I think you should stay here in the camp.”

“I will do no such thing.”

“The goblins aren’t to be taken lightly. They can swarm on you in an instant.”

“Which is all the more reason I should go along to help.”

There was no arguing with her, not with that stubborn set of her chin and those flashing blue eyes. Damn, she was beautiful when she set her mind to do something.

“All right, then, let’s go, but we have to be careful.”

We climbed the narrow path up the cliff side to the ancient temple. Bastivar was a crumbling, pillared fortress carved into the mountainside in honor of the goddess Innessa. Worshippers had long since vanished, and as long as anyone could remember, the only current inhabitants were goblins.

“Hidari mi compli,” we chanted, and sneaked inside. Our eyes adjusted to the dim light in the entryway.

“I’ll draw some of them out,” I whispered. “Stay concealed, and when you see one coming, shoot it.”

Down one corridor, a group of three goblins came toward me. I aimed and shot one, then ran back when the other two charged. Cali’s first arrow barely missed my head, but she got one. I shot the last one as she readied another arrow.

“Nicely done,” I whispered. “Now, we—”

“Achoo!” Cali couldn’t stop her sneeze in time. She whispered, “I’m sorry.”

A great snarling ensued from within the main corridor. A horde of beady, yellow eyes came toward us.
       “Cali, run!”

She fled, and we ran down the cliff side as fast as we could without falling off. We reached the forest floor, and I looked back. Goblins streamed out of the ruins, so many that some fell off the cliff. There had never been this many before. It must have been a long while since anyone had cleared them out. We sped through the underbrush. Thorns scratched our skin and snagged our leathers, but they were gaining on us.

We reached the main path, and I grabbed Cali. “Give me my father’s sword.”

She unsheathed it and handed it to me. “Galadin, there’s too many. We’ll never fight them off.”

“Conceal yourself and run. Now!”

She clutched my sleeve. “I won’t leave you here!”

For the brief moment while the goblins closed in, I met her panic-stricken eyes. I’d never met a woman I would die for, until then. “Go!”

I pushed her on, and she turned to run. Goblins burst through the bush, and I readied my sword. Right and left, I swung, impaling and kicking them off the blade, chopping off spindly gray limbs, a head when I could aim just right. Piles of jerking bodies began to pile at my feet. The onslaught lessened, but before I could catch my breath, another wave of them burst forth.

One of them latched onto my arm, its jagged teeth sinking in through the leather. I cried out. Then, an arrow sank into its ugly body. Cali had come back, her next arrow nocked and ready. I shook the goblin off my arm. Still, they came, yet another wave.

She threw down her bow and ran to my side. “Galadin, get back!”

“What? No, I told you to run!”

“No time.”

She pulled me back, stepped in front of me, and held out her hands. Blue fire burst from her palms, like flaming blasts of lightning, but continuous, and dreadfully hot. I had to back away from the intensity of the heat. The inferno charred the goblins, turning them from gray, to black, to piles of ashes before my eyes. The fire consumed every bush and weed, everything in its path, until the goblins in the rear decided they were outmatched. Shrieking, they turned and hightailed it back up the cliff and into Bastivar.

Cali stared at her smoking hands. I ran to her, relieved to see that she wasn’t burned. But, she was weakened. I embraced her, letting her catch her breath, her head on my shoulder. I ran my fingers along her braid.

“I didn’t know you could do that,” I said.

She raised her head and peered into my eyes. “I didn’t either.”

Then, our lips met, and nothing else mattered.
