10 Things You Didn’t Know About THE DARKNESS OF LIGHT ~guest post by Tammy Farrell

Today I'm happy to bring you a guest post from Tammy Farrell, sharing little known details about her debut historical fantasy release, The Darkness of Light. Be sure to check out her fantastic giveaway at the end of this post.

10 Things You Didn’t Know About THE DARKNESS OF LIGHT
by Tammy Farrell

1.    The main character used to contemporary vampires. In different versions of the story they lived in Toronto, New York and even Pennsylvania. I could never make those settings work, though and so I decided to set them in the 6th century.

2.    In the contemporary versions of The Darkness of Light, Corbin worked as a bouncer and Mara was a waitress. Malcolm was some mysterious millionaire. He never liked to work, even then. ;)

3.    I wrote The Darkness of Light while listening to a combination of Ed Sheeran and Within Temptation and I would listen to that playlist over and over and over for months. I listened to Ed Sheeran when writing the more romantic moments between Mara and Corbin. And I listened to Within Temptation when writing the more intense, angry moments that Mara experienced.

4.    The character, Rowan, is inspired by Merlin in Arthurian legend. I really love the legend of King Arthur and have always had a fascination with Merlin. He’s such an ambiguous character—is he good, is he bad, is he both? I wanted Rowan to reflect some of that mystery.

5.    Corbin is also inspired by Arthurian legend. I molded him from my image of King Arthur. Corbin is an honorable character and embodies all of the qualities that I think King Arthur does. Even his name—Corbin—has an Arthurian connection. “Corbin Castle” is the name of the castle of the grail in Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur.

6.    The character Annora was originally intended to be an antagonist. She was supposed to be a jealous, haughty snob when I first created her. But as I put her on paper, her personality just came out as sweet and shy. I couldn’t steer her any other way. She definitely made her own rules through the writing process.

7.    The original title of The Darkness of Light was The Keeper’s Daughter. I’m not sure when or why I changed it, but I think I like the new title better.

8.    In the novel, Valenia is a veiled fortress on the shores of Devon County England. While Valenia is fictional, it was inspired by the ruins of Dunluce Castle in County Antrim, Ireland. When I was describing Valenia in the novel, I was always looking at a picture of Dunluce Castle.

9.    This book was written and drafted four times without an ending. I still don’t know if that’s just the way I write, or if I wasn’t sure how to end it. I knew I’d have to go back and rewrite it a few more times and for some reason, I felt like ending it in the early writing phase was bad luck.

10.    In the original ending of The Darkness of Light, no one wins. Without giving too much away, the new ending has a glimmer of hope for the characters. When I wrote the first ending, no one triumphed and everyone was unhappy. I didn’t want to leave it that way, so I added in a few revisions and found the perfect balance.

Excerpt:

The man in the long black robe bellowed out to the crowd. “By order of King Gerren of the realm of Dumnonia, we are not to tolerate evil among us.” He pointed his finger at the accused woman on the platform. Corbin used his keen sight to examine her. She looked wretched, defeated, and certainly not one of their kind. Could Rowan have been mistaken?
Corbin turned to Malcolm. “Are they charging her with witchcraft?”
Malcolm nodded with a smirk. “It appears that way. Fools. They waste their time looking for witches. They have no idea what walks amongst them.”
They were half way through the crowd when Corbin felt a chill, like lightening, as his arm brushed against someone. He walked a few paces and stopped, making sure to keep his face concealed within his hood. He saw a girl, barely a woman, standing on her toes to see over the shoulders in front of her.
“That’s her,” Malcolm whispered. “That’s Mara.”
Her expression was panicked, and she didn’t seem to notice Corbin staring at her. “Should we speak with her?” Corbin asked.
Malcolm gave him a hard shove. “Not now. We will come back for her later.”
Corbin took one last glance at her and continued towards the front of the crowd. It wouldn’t do any good to speak to her now. Not like this.

Tea Leaf Tales: Alien Jungle Gym

I couldn’t resist taking a closer look. The snowless patch underneath made me curious. Somehow the contraption gave off heat. By now, in this long winter, anything warm merited investigation.

Unmarked, with a cone extending between propped legs it seemed alien and spaceshippy, but the ladder and numerous, tiny lookout windows said children’s jungle gym.

I placed a hand on the side and heat soaked through the knit of my mitten. I gave a rap and called a tentative hello toward the nearest window. After a minute with no reply, a frigid gust prompted me to try the steps. Shards of melting ice slowed my progress. When at last I reached the level of the porthole, my eyes shot open, and my mouth formed a speechless circle.

Information about the Enchanted Bookstore Legends:

Genre: epic fantasy romance

The Enchanted Bookstore Legends are about Lyra McCauley, a woman destined to become one of five strong women in her family who possess unique magical abilities and serve as Scribes in Dragonspeir. The Scribes span a long history, dating from 1200 to present day. Each Scribe is expected to journey through Dragonspeir, both the good and evil factions, then draft a written account. Each book contains magic with vast implications.

Lyra was first introduced to Dragonspeir as a young girl, when she met the high sorcerer, Cullen Drake, through a gift of one of those enchanted books. Using its magic, he escorted her into the parallel world of Dragonspeir. Years later, she lost that volume and forgot the world and Cullen. These legends begin where he finds her again—she is thirty-five, standing in his enchanted bookstore, and Dragonspeir needs her.

When Lyra reopens that enchanted book, she confronts a series of quests where she is expected to save the good Alliance from destruction by the evil Black Dragon. While learning about her role, Lyra and Cullen fall in love. He is 220 years old and kept alive by Dragonspeir magic. Cullen will die if Dragonspeir is taken over by the evil faction…Lyra becomes the Scribe.

Seeking a Scribe: Enchanted Bookstore Legend One

Lyra McCauley is a writer and loves fantasy novels, but until she opens a selection from bookstore owner Cullen Drake, she has no idea he’s a wizard character who lives a double life inside that volume…or the story’s magic will compel her from the edge of depression to adventure, danger, and love.

His gift to Lyra, the Book of Dragonspeir, was actually her copy, misplaced years ago. Lost in her pain following divorce and death, she fails to recognize him as her childhood playmate from the fantasyland. Friendship builds anew. Attraction sparks. But Lyra doubts whether a wizard is capable of love. She’s torn—should she protect her fragile heart or risk new love?

Opening the book’s cover, she confronts a quest: save Dragonspeir from destruction by the Black Dragon before he utilizes power of August’s red moon to expand his strength and overthrow the opposing Imperial Dragon. Lyra accepts the challenge, fearing Cullen will perish if evil wins. Along with magical animal guides, Cullen helps her through many perils, but ultimately Lyra must use her own power…and time is running out.

Heritage Avenged: Enchanted Bookstore Legend Two

Lyra McCauley receives an alarming letter from the coroner who evaluated her deceased aunt, originally thought to have died of cancer. The news causes Lyra to take leave from her job and travel from sunny Tampa to the frozen island community in northern Michigan. Questioning whether Dragonspeir magic was responsible for her aunt’s death, she resolves to learn the truth and accepts the Imperial Dragon’s appointment into the Alliance sorcery training.

Additionally, becoming proficient in magic craft is the only way she can bridge the gap between her mortal human world and her lover’s. Cullen, a 220-year-old wizard, is dependent upon his Dragonspeir magic for immortality. He is her only family now; she cannot lose him.

Evil forces block her and try to steal her inherited scribal aura. Riding a stealth dragon, a cloaked rider pursues Lyra. Both the Alliance and Dark Realm alchemists lay tricks and traps. Her aura equals that of the first and most powerful Scribe, but will Lyra’s novice training allow her to discover the truth…and find a life with Cullen? Or will the Dark Realm keep them apart?

Lost Volumes: Enchanted Bookstore Legend Three

When Lyra McCauley learns residents of Dragonspeir’s Alliance are suffering with a deadly plague, she doesn’t heed the warnings of her fiancĂ©, wizard Cullen Drake, to remain safe in her human world. After all, she’s the present Scribe—one of five strong women in her ancestry who possessed unique magic, each destined to protect the Alliance against the evil Black Dragon of the Dark Realm. With Cullen dependent upon Alliance power to maintain his immortality, the stakes are doubled for Lyra.

She leaves her college teaching and puts herself at risk for the community afflicted by black magic. To find a cure, she and Cullen travel into the vile, lawless underworld of Terza to strike a bargain with an expert. Their efforts further enrage the Black Dragon, vowing to decimate the Alliance and avenge the murder of his heir.

Lyra must secure the three lost volumes of the Book of Dragonspeir. Written by the three earliest Scribes, each book contains energy. Possession of the entire set will enable overthrow of the Dark Realm. Following clues into dangerous lands, Lyra and Cullen seek those volumes. His assistants, Kenzo the tiger owl and Noba the pseudodragon, prove invaluable aids. Only if they succeed, will the Alliance be safe and Lyra reach closer to the immortality she needs to live a life with Cullen.

Staurolite: Enchanted Bookstore Legend Four

Lyra McCauley, current Scribe of the Alliance, is the only one who can decode magic hidden in the recently retrieved ancient texts written by her ancestors, the first four Scribes. Information in those writings can help Lyra locate the four missing keystones, which will restore power to the Alliance and allow overthrow of the Dark Realm. With peace restored, she and her beloved, Cullen, could finally marry.

Time is short with the Black Dragon’s Dark Realm increasing attacks to avenge the death of his heir. Many innocent lives are lost. Alliance residents are forced into hiding. Magicals and blue dragons follow leadership of the Imperial Dragon and the other three Guardians into battle to defend the Alliance.

While Lyra unlocks the ancient magic, she opens herself up to scribal powers from her ancestors. She alone can fight the deadliest of the Dark Realm’s forces—the cimafa stealth dragons—but at a cost. The energy flux threatens her health and ability to learn where to find the missing keystones. Can Lyra overcome this shrewd tactic of the Black Dragon to decimate the Alliance?

 Quintessence: Enchanted Bookstore Legend Five
~the final volume~

Barbaric Dark Realm warfare threatens to overtake all Dragonspeir lands, including the Alliance. Lyra McCauley, the fifth Scribe of the Alliance, finds herself in a desperate competition to gather four missing keystones. Those amulets of the four natural elements guarantee victory for the side possessing them. The Dark Realm’s alchemist, Eburscon, beats her to finding the water gem, the Pearl of Pendola. Three more keystones remain: the fluorite containing earth energy, the moonstone of the sky, and the fiery, dangerous Emtori Ruby.

The powerful gems, stolen centuries ago, channel astral energies and can restore much-needed Alliance power—the last hope. The wizard, Cullen, who is Lyra’s beloved, relies on Alliance magic for his immortality and will perish if the land falls to the Dark Realm.

Lyra uses her rare magical energies of quintessence and the Staurolite, governor of the four natural elements, to guide her to the hidden keystones. However, greed and power drive opponents, who challenge her in close pursuit, planning to destroy the Alliance, or to claim the power of quintessence for themselves.

The Dark Realm captures the ten-year-old Alliance seer, Kessa. Her abilities can give them information about the locations of the keystones, complicating Lyra’s plans. Will her love, allegiance, and quintessence allow her to save Cullen, Kessa, and the Alliance before the Dark Realm claims all of Dragonspeir?

Tea Leaf Tales: Black Smoke Waitress

A wide-hipped waitress stormed from the kitchen half-dragging, half-carrying this piece of board, which looked like an old countertop from its single, odd rounded corner.

My first time in the café, I looked up from the novel chapter I was writing on a word doc and sat quietly, following her with my eyes since none of the other patrons took notice of the trails of dark smoke seeping from her ears.

With a loud huff and even louder groan, she hoisted the board against a pierced metal support. While balancing it on a single raised knee with more grace than I expected, she yanked power cables from the wall beside her, rummaged in the depths of her apron pocket, and withdrew a hammer and nails.

Strings of expletives swirled around the room, and more than one steamy cup upset. Customers looked up from their laptops and notebooks, dumbfounded and grumbling.

Even when the customers demanded free refills, she remained undeterred from her mission and drove home four nails with fierce precision. She extracted a piece of chalk from the expansive pocket, and with hard strokes and teeth-grating screeches, she scrawled her message. After her final flourish, she offered a saccharin smile and sashayed behind the counter as if she enjoyed pulling their wi-fi connection.

White-rimmed pupils shot daggers my way, and I inched my laptop closed in empathy…and fear of her black smoke.

Writing a Sacred Battle Scene ~guest post by fantasy author Juli D. Revezzo

I'm very pleased to have Juli D. Revezzo return and share how she wrote some of the engaging battles in her urban fantasy release, Passion's Sacred Dance.

Background for a sacred battle
By
Juli D. Revezzo

Several years ago I read Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley and that rekindled my interest in the Arthurian Legends. I’d been in love with them since childhood—probably because of Disney’s The Sword In the Stone. I even studied them in school courtesy of a brush with Joseph Campbell’s The Power of Myth. From there I found my way to The White Goddess by Robert Graves. We’ll just leave aside the conflicting thoughts on that legendary tome, but suffice it to say that led me to pick up a copy of the Mabinogion and other books of Celtic mythology. Those books are filled with tales of heroic deeds, goddesses appearing with mysterious directives for our heroes, and princes.

Sounds a bit like any beloved fantasy novel doesn’t it? I thought so too. So it wasn’t hard to mix it into my own urban fantasy romance novel, PASSION’S SACRED DANCE.

For me, the more exciting story of the battles between the gods of the Tuatha dĂ© Danann and their foe the Formorians took precedence. You don’t know that one? Well, the story goes that one day a bard of the Tuatha dĂ© Danann happened to enter the realm of the Formorians. Bards were well-respected at the time and no leader worth his salt would send one away empty handed.

The Formorian leader, Balor, however, thought he was above such hospitality and treated the visitor with disrespect. Perturbed the bard went home and told his king and kinfolk about the slight. The news appalled the Tuatha dé Danann and they went to war with the Formorie.

That war inspired the thought, ‘What if this battle was only one battle between the gods and their warriors? And what if these battles took place throughout time, and involved one specific family over and over and an ever-moving sacred battleground?’ Thus began what became PASSION’S SACRED DANCE. J Would you like a peek into this ongoing war?

Okay, Here’s an excerpt:

When the hairs on the back of Stacy’s neck prickled, a quick glance over her shoulder confirmed
the woman still watched her. Uncomfortable, Stacy strode to the far side of the cafĂ© to escape the woman’s scrutiny. Something told her to look back.
The woman with the startling eyes stood right behind her, glaring. Her eyes glowed like quicksilver.
Creepy!
Miss Silver Eyes smelled of patchouli, musk, and some other strange scent she couldn’t identify.
The woman leaned close to Stacy’s ear, and her voice sounded raspy when she spoke, “We will have this ground. This harshad time, Stacy Macken, the ground is ours, and they will never dance again.”
Harshad? How did she know about the harshad wars? Had the time truly come, then, already?
Stacy stared as impossibly long incisors slid down from the woman’s gums like snake fangs. Miss Silver Eyes clamped a hand around her upper arm. Shock pulsed through Stacy’s body, rooting her to the spot, despite her mind’s order to flee. The woman’s steely gaze, the ruby and shark’s tooth earring glittering in her right earlobe, and the dark threat mesmerized Stacy.
“No, you won’t have this ground.” A cool male voice brought the silver-eyed woman up short and the fog lifted from Stacy’s mind.
Aaron Fielding stood before her dressed in casual jeans and a gray, cable knit sweater. He seemed right at home here among the students, and yet somehow he also stood apart.
The air shifted. Stacy could have sworn his leather coat, for just an instant, took on the shape of a golden eagle’s wings.
A high-pitched whine escaped from the silver-eyed woman’s throat. She cocked her head as she took Aaron in, a bemused smile spreading over her face as if she were privy to some private joke.
He retrieved an item from his coat. At first, Stacy thought the object might be a baton, and then it changed shape and substance, wood to steel. The innocuous baton became a sword.
An hysterical laugh bubbled up inside her and Miss Silver Eyes tossed her aside. Stacy landed hard against a table and gasped at the pain. She rolled over, sitting upright, and pulled her knees to her chest.
Miss Silver Eyes threw a punch at Aaron. He sidestepped her fist and flicked the baton-sword-thing at her head.
“Now, wait!” Stacy jumped to her feet and caught the baton before it bashed the woman’s face in.
Aaron grasped her upraised hand, removed it from the baton, and thrust her behind him. “For your own good, don’t interfere.”
Miss Silver Eyes screamed. Steel glinted from her fists as she rushed headlong at Aaron.
He raised the weapon while muttering something in a foreign language.
Stacy squeezed her eyes shut, too frightened to move. Surely, the woman would knock them both to the floor. The impact she anticipated never came. Instead, an explosion of light split the air. Cringing and blinking in the brightness, she saw that the woman, hands outstretched, had gone utterly still.
Stacy frowned as she studied the woman, wondering what happened.
Aaron repositioned the weapon he carried and shoved it into a hidden pocket in his coat. “Stay back.”
He clasped a hand around Stacy’s wrist and pushed her a little further behind him. Or tried. She dug her heels in and didn’t move. Aaron frowned hard.
“For your own good, stay out of the way,” he said.
“Why should I?” Her heart beat a wicked tempo and panic skittered through her.
“If the spell breaks before I’m done you’ll regret it, trust me.”
“Why should I do anything, let alone trust you? This is my gallery.”
“Would you rather have her—” He nodded over his shoulder to Miss Silver Eyes, and his breath hissed through his teeth. “—rip your throat out? No? Then, stand back.”
How dare the man order her around! “Now see here—”
A loud whining growl drew his attention from their budding argument.
Aaron turned back to the silver-eyed woman, grasped her arm, and whispered in her ear. Her feet
began to move, one step and then another, as a zombie might—unseeing and stiff in posture. Aaron kept a hand on her back, leading her to the entrance. He opened the gate and shoved her through, then slammed it shut with an Irish curse. He proceeded to mutter something, tracing a finger along the gate’s edge.
His words reminded Stacy of something out of Chaucer. Azure light danced around the gate’s
perimeter.
Aaron turned to face her. “This should never have happened,” he said. “Forgive me, Stacy.”
Surprised to see his medallion glowing with a soft golden light and his eyes an unearthly shade of green, Stacy gasped. She stepped back only to be jostled aside as the patrons slowly filed into the parking lot.
Wondering why the woman threatened her and why Aaron felt the need to rescue her, Stacy bent to pick up a broken glass—what had once been the discarded dishes before the fight started.
What was going on? Why was Aaron Fielding even here? A second more and she would’ve shoved the woman into her security guards’ hands.
“Thanks, but I didn’t need your help,” she said.
Peering through the crowd pushing through the back door, she could just make out the flutter of Miss Silver Eyes’ skirt. “What was that woman on?”
“Better to ask what she is,” Aaron said. Then he shook his head. “No. You don’t want to know. We were lax in our vigilance, and this intrusion never should’ve
been allowed.”

Blurb:
Battling mounting debt, Stacy Macken is determined not to lose her historic art gallery. When Aaron Fielding appears and offers to help, she fights to keep the attraction sizzling between them from clouding her judgment. He may be her savior in disguise--but can she trust him?

Aaron intrigues her with tales of the Tuatha dé Danann, sworn warriors who protect humanity from the monsters seeking their destruction. If Aaron can prove what he claims, she would give up anything to help--even the gallery he claims is sacred ground. But with her property set to stage the next epic battle, she needs answers. An old family diary will confirm the ancient legend is true, if only they can find it in time.

If the battle is lost, the enemy will take control of Earth for the next five hundred years. Stacy and Aaron's budding love might only complicate things.
